My speedo seems to be going into to hyper drive lately and showing speeds that I am definately not doing. I had it wound right past the 180km/hr mark the other day and I was only doing about 110 -120 kms/hr. Anyone else ever have a similar problem ???

If it used to be more accurate and you haven't changed to a different tyre size or style, I can think of a couple of things that might cause this. Either the speedometer needs to be cleaned and relubricated, or the drive cable may be binding and snapping forward. I could be mistaken, but I have the impression that the speedometer has a damper that might smooth out the wild needle waving that this would cause on other speedometers.

I've heard of several speedos going bad and this is exactly what happened just before they totally died. Try taking the spedo cable off and lubing it up and putting some lithium grease in the little plastic gears where the cable connects to the speedo.

Speedometer cables went "gonzo" or indicated higher speeds before failing the first couple of years (mine included), based solely from the number of posts here. I once was going 60 mph in a 25 zone, but nobody noticed. I later pulled into a local gas station doing 70 mpg. When I pulled back onto the road I was doing 0 mph. Don't know for sure, but I thought most had to do with the fitting on the lower end?? Most cable failures seemed to be replaced under warranty.
I don't remember seeing much comment since the 04-05 model year or so? I wonder if Triumph fixed the part? What year is your speedie SRS?

Thanks for all the feedback,,, No haven't had the tyres off lately.. And I haven't noticed a blue bottle on my bike either!! I have an 04 America. I did take the cable apart and re grease it but that didn't seem to help so I have taken the black piece the cable mounts to on the back of the speedo and put some grease in there. Went for a 200km ride today and it didn't play up but I seriously don't think that it could be that easy of a fix. Was there a recall on these??

Sounds like you got it. What I heard from bad speedo guys was that the little plastic gears were not greased at all from the factory, or at dealer setup - whoever was supposed to do it didn't! But with no grease the plastic gears would quickly start to crack and then break into little bits never to work again. And of course you need to replace the entire speedo to get 3¢ worth of new gears.
