Just got a call from my wife, who received a call from our old neighbor in South Carolina. Seems she came home, and saw a woman crawling out of one of our windows (we are living in Connecticut now and our house is empty and on the market down there), so she calls our realtor, who comes over immediately, and talks to the couple who "were checking the place out" but didn't bother to go through a realtor. OK, now WTF, but who in their right mind crawls into a house, occupied or otherwise, where all the windows are closed and there is a for-sale sign in the yard? And then, my soon to be EX-realtor calls the sheriff and after talking to the couple decides to call the sheriff off. UUUUHH, excuse me, but I do believe the sheriff should make that call! I just can't believe someone is that ballsy, and thank God for neighbors. Our soon to be ex-agent tries to slough it off by saying "well, the house is empty, so they couldn't steal anything!" Well, no, but they could vandalize it just for the hell of it, now couldn't they. And there are still 3 major appliances, copper wire that could be ripped out of the walls, whatever, it doesn't matter!! Man, it's probably a good thing that my bike IS 80 miles away and it's 17 degrees out, cause I think right now I'd probably wear the tread off of my tires riding off the steam I'm venting right now...

Empty or not it is still B&E! Like you said, the sherrif should make the call on that.

Exactly, if someone caught me (if I were THAT stupid) crawling out of a window in that situation, of course I'd say, "OH, I was just having a look around!" DUH! Well, he hasn't been doing any wonders for us selling the house anyhow, he just signed his "death warrant" on second chances now...

not to mention if either mr or mrs Ballsy were injured on your property (crawling through a window can be a bit risky) you would be looking at a law suit.

They obviously aren't legit. Probably using the 'we are in the market' as a nice cover and were really after whatever might be in the house. Why is it unlocked to begin with?

a bum window latch that I overlooked in the process of packing up the house to move. I'm having a friend go over this weekend and bolt it up for me!

well, just got the scoop, they apparently were there for some time last week with their agent, who told them to call her and shed bring them by anytime to see it again, but the father of the girl who is looking is apparently a big shot (at least in his own mind) who can do as he pleases, and didn't quite understand what all the fuss was about, nor did his idiot daughter who laughed it all off! Man, you run into all kinds!

I pressume the house was locked up? In that case was the window forced?

People have got plenty of cheek, they could have been checking the place out to SQUAT or like you said to see if any heating system was worth ripping out etc etc....

Needs to be secure, and thank god for neighbours who care

Greg, Maybe I shouldn't add to your worries on the vacant house but as you know NO one has a right to "secured property" The reason I am responding to your post is to mention an incident we had in the city I work as a fire fighter in. A vacant home for sale, became a clandestine Meth lab one night for some low lifes and this once beautiful 2 story home was reduced to a charred pile of rubble. Tmax
