What kind of brake fluid do I need for an '06 Speedie? It's likely in the manual, but I don't have that with me.

I believe that any Dot 4 or higher rated brake fluid is what my manual specifies.

DOT 4 only. From the owners manual:

"At the front, use only DOT 4. At the rear, DOT3 or DOT4 specification fluid may be used on the Bonneville and T100 models only. On America and Speedmaster models, only DOT4 fluid may be used."

Also, you don't have to carry around your owners manual to see what it says. You can download a copy here.

DOT 4 is what the manual asks for.

You have to completely clean out the entire system and get rid of every drop of the old fluid if you want to use DOT5. DOT5 has slightly better specifications and, being silicon based, won't damage paint. BUT, mixed with even a small amount of DOT3 or 4, it will turn to jello.

The stuff I got was a Valvoline full synthetic. "Exceeds DOT 3 & 4 specifications and mixes with your old fluid." Works great so far.

I have had great results using the Valvoline full syn brake fluid. I have been using it in all the cars and bike.

Perhaps a well known tip - Instead of pumping all the old nasty fluid through the brake system, consider a turkey baster to draw off the old fluid before pouring in the new. Just don't reuse the turkey baster at Thanksgiving - brake fluid is highly toxic - unless of course...
