Hey all, been a while. Just got back from a year in Korea and started up my 03 Speedmaster today. It finally cranked up and idles fine, but at around 3K starts to stumble and spit a little...sounds possibly rich. It got a little better after idling around 5 minutes, but I don't like to let it sit running longer than that and didn't want to take it on the road as is. I haven't pulled the plugs yet, but the tank was half full of 92 octane with stabilizer for the last six months. Any suggestions to even out throttle response after sitting for so long? Thanks. BTW, I'm running a Freak CAI and TB needles.

Welcome Back Robert,
Is Korea still cold as ever this time of year? I was at Kunsan from '76 to '77. Anyway, I would just ride for a bit and see if clears up, or drain and replace the fuel. Like you say the plugs my be a problem.
Good Luck
Bob

New gas.
Some sort of STP or carb cleaner in tank of high test should take care of it. And run it hard, they like it.

Did you empty the carbs before you let it sit?
I was off on a 3 week hunting this summer. I got back and went for a ride and the bike wouldn't run.
There was just enough gunk in the carbs to foul up the whole works.

Fresh ethanol fuel will probably clean it out fairly well.

Thanks all, I'll try a short road run to start. I didn't drain the carbs like I probably should have, so a additive will probably be my first go and then some seafoam to round it off. Never used seafoam, but guys in my Mercury Marauder club swear by it. As for Korea, yeah, still cold. I left this year just as the January winds started kicking in at around 40 miles an hours everyday. We didn't get the 52 inches of snow that dropped last year, but it's not over yet...glad my tour was only one year. Has anyone else had major issues with chrome pitting on their bikes for that year range? Try as I might I have a hard time keeping up with it. Thanks again for the replies.

Since it sat with the tank half empty, there is a good chance that some moisture has condensed in the tank. Drain off a quart or so from the tank using the reserve position on the petcock to get the stuff from the bottom.

Welcome back to the states! I haven't had any issues with chrome pitting on my 03 Speedmaster, but then I live in a dry warm climate. I know the regular Bonnie owners complain quite a bit about the lack of chrome quality on their bikes.

My chrome will pit up over the winter if I don't watch it. I usually give it a good springtime scrubbing with the mother's chrome polish to clean it off.

Welcome back. Korea sounds a lot like the front range of MT; Browning, Choteau country . Good suggestions; fresh fuel, seafoam, especially the "go for a ride" part. I should take that advice myself.

Pitting? I had a friend who contended you should apply wax to a vehicle in the fall and leave it in place till spring to protect against salt and surface crud. I never did that, but do believe in "Mother's" chrome polish.

Well, update is bike is running fine. I got new plugs, decided to try the side gap and put in an appropriate amount of sea foam and off I went...bike ran better than ever. Gotta say I'm convinced on the benefit of side gap plugs now.

Glad shes running good now and welcom home. I spent 13 months is Korea 75 - 76 Camp Casey (Dong Du Chon) 2nd Inf.
As I recall back then the whole country smelt like kimchee and everything north of Souel was pretty much an open sewer. Would hope they modernized a bit since then.
