I'm just replacing my chain and wondering whether I should replace the cush drive rubber or not (27000 mi). How much play should it have? The manual says 'replace as necessary' but no specifics. It's all in one piece and I don't see any cracking. There's a little play in it but I haven't broken out my protractor to measure how much.

Thanks, that was the thread I was looking for. My searches on this site never seem to work very well. I bought a new CD rubber along with my new chain but it looks like I'll be holding on to it for a little bit. My chain was kinking up pretty bad but my sprockets are still in great shape so I'm just doing the chain for now. When I was inspecting the chain to figure out what my clunking noise was I checked out the play in the CD and thought I might need to replace it.

The Triumph tech I talked to when mine started to have some play in it said it shouldn't move at all...zero play. If you already have a new cush drive rubber on hand I'd change it out, but then I like to pamper my bike. If you can get ahold of some thick rubber like trash did, you might be able to extend the life of what's there.

I think what I'll do is take the new one and put it in while I've got the wheel off so I can compare the two.

I've had clutch snag on my Speedy from new. The last time I had the back wheel off, I used some inner tube and cut it to fit between the crush drive rubber and the hub, it made a real big difference. No more snag and smoother gear changes.

Greg,
I’m coming up on 47k on the scooter. While putting the last set of tires on the bike I inspected the CD. Looked like it was starting to show a little wear. I picked up a new one and the next time I change out the tires I’ll replace it while I have the rear tire off. If you’re only at 27k, you shouldn’t need to replace it yet….

I don't think the mileage really plays a definitive role. My cush drive started causing me problems after 4 months of ownership (around 5.000 kms). I replaced it with the TBS cush drive following someone's advice on here (perhaps Derek/Salmaglie).
I didn't confirm it on the original thread (below), but it WAS the cush drive.

I put the new one in last night and there was no play in it compared to the 1 or 2 degrees of play with the old one. Now I just have to get a chain that fits (dealer ordered wrong one due to a typo in the catalog) and extract one of the screws from the front brake cylinder since I stripped it trying to get it out (changing the front pads).

Mine is also worn. Noticed as I put in on a lift at 7000 km. I now have 10 so I better get to it. Not sure if I can feel it on the road but I have 1/4" of play measured as I turn the tire one way then the other and observing the marks while in gear.

When you ordered the CD, assuming it was not in stock, do you order 4 each or do you order 1 set (that comes with 4)?

Just order one. The rubbers are joined together. Triumph eStore sells em for less that 80 bucks. Talk to Bret. Chain Kits for 189 too. I should receive my order on this Wednesday. Always have had play in my cush drive. Always. I'll see if the tbird cush takes up the slack. Vera is an old bird after all. I feel a stealership rant arising, time to go yank some fish outa the surf.

I just got done installing the TBird cush drive and it's very tight now. Love it. Had to use some mild dish soap to get the carrier to seat properly but it's an easy job.
btw, the aluminum Craftsman jack made the wheel removal/install extremely easy due to the very small increments I was able to raise and lower by.
