Hi, and Welcome.
Just for your info really... there is no emissions check on a bike MOT, and so therefore it will have no repecussions on whether or not you bike will pass the MOT if you remove it. My 03 passed an MOT without it on...
Get it ripped off!!!!

And they do over the winter too!!
The only reason to pull it off is that it causes the header pipes to get really hot and that is what causes them to go gold and then blue. Unless you have a ludicrous amount of time to sit and polish them after every time you've been out, or don't mind them looking blue, then leave it on. I use my bike every day, and haven't cleaned him for around 3 weeks (and yeah, he's filthy) and really don't have time to spend hours cleaning every week.
It's personal choice. I choose to keep the pipes chrome looking.

Gina's right that there is no MOT emissions check on bikes in the UK at present. The EU have been pushing for leaner emissions on bikes for some time now but we've escaped it being MOT enforced for now.
I suppose it's up to you and your 'green conscience' whether to remove it or not and there's a lot of debate whether it makes much difference in the big scale of things anyway. One thing's for certain though, you'll not be able to make any carb adjustments, combined with free flow air filter/ exhausts without serious popping and pipe blueing with it left in place.
PS And welcome mate!
Sometimes it takes a whole tank full of fuel before you think straight
