Hello, first off, great forum.. Anyway just got my TBA back rom local Triumph dealer... TBA has Short Triumph Silencers, running Main Jet (130) and Pilot (45) with Needle (N82Y) all installed and tuned by dealer. Everything else is stock. Now my problem is 1. Popping when slowing down in any gear 2. No top end power, only getting 140 kmh and no more 3. 1st gear ok to 60kmh - 2nd gear ok to 90kmh - 3rd gear ok to 125kmh then 4th only gets to 140kmh and no increase in 5th gear.
On giving it full throttle in 5th gear it starts to run like s__t. Dealer not sure what to do.. has been in the shop now for 3 days and still no better.
Plz HELP if you can

Just a guess here and with little to go on...like your location...yes it does make a differance...but based upon your description of your set up and your isues it sounds like your running way to rich...45's are a little large for the triumph short's , and even the 130's are a tad large...the needle # I'm not familiar with but pull your plugs and check tham my guess is there soaking wet...popping on decel is to be expected to some extent when you change to a freer flowing exhaust...due to conditions inheret in the system....so worry about your bogging then deal with the poping!

I agree with Steve. Both my bikes are as stock as they come... but with the AI off. And it really is that simple.
Gina
03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

Spyk, I'm curious what reaction you get from the dealer after he reads the threads you forwarded him. Keep us informed, and best of luck to ya! Mike

Just got my BA back from peter stevens in Adelaide, they to installed short cut pipe and i also have poping on decel. No jets have been changed they only adjusted the needle to the ricer side which they ensured me this was the correct way to do it (i should trust a name like peter stevens MC they did say that some installs have been jetted but only after testing mixtures ). Havent tested at top end yet as its raining today . I will contiue to watch this thread as it may also help me with the fine tuneing. LOVE the sound Where in victoria did you purchase the bike?.

Thanks goes to Pat (Dinqua). He's the holder of the hammer. I will say, Marking small dots on your throttle control at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and Wide Open Throttle and then a dot on your grip, sure helps to understand where "in the throttle position" the "problem" occurs.

Start by looking at the sparkplugs, they will seldom lie about the air/fuel mixture. In very rare cases, a very lean mixture will burn poorly and leave rich looking carbon deposits on the plugs. On the other hand, a very rich mixture can wash the plugs clean and look like the engine is running lean. Triumph silencers are claimed to not need rejetting. BUT, since the engine is setup to run lean anyway, one size richer jets may give you a bit more power. A slight crackling during deceleration is OK for a high performance engine. Once you get the jetting sorted out and the air injection system is removed, (kit here, http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/ai_removal_kit.html ) Adjust the idle mixture for best idle speed and your bike should run well enough to make you smile.

Everyone is saying to remove the AI from the bike but being a new owner, im a little bit hesitant worrying about warrenty issues etc.. I trust everyones information and respect the fact that info like this is priceless and comes from many years of experience and testing. I will purchase the removal kit, at AU$50 it won't burn a big hole in the wallet..and install and test. As for jets i'll wait untill after our winter(wedding to plan) Would like to know what Triumph UK have to say about removal, or is it just a country by counrty regulation??? PS in the process of designing a custom passenger foot peg bracket, if anyone has designed there own i'd be keen to see photo's..

Hmmm, are Speedmaster and America needles the same?
You may want to try some TBS needles, Triumph part #T12410240. You can easily change these out yourself as well. They have a different taper, allowing more fuel. You will need to adjust your air mixture after the swap, so if you have an 05 or above, make sure you have a "D"tool. More instructions can easily be obtained if you need them.
This all depends on what your current symptoms are. Throttle position is your gauge/guide. Check it out and post your findings.
What year is your bike?

Spyk,
What year is your bike? Is it new, or is it a few years old. Has it ever run well for you? Did it run right before the dealer made changes?
My Speedmaster is about 4 years old. I was losing power, and I saw my plugs were black and fouled. I replaced the plugs and plug wires and got back some performance. It cleaned up the fouling too. Later I replaced the coils and got back all the power I had lost. If your bike is older, this is something to consider. If it's new, then, well, nevermind.
If I were you, I would install new plugs. You need to do this periodically anyway. Do it yourself. If you don't have a good plug wrench and a plug gapping tool, go buy them. I would also buy a torque wrench. After I started using a torque wrench, I found I probably had been over tightening my plugs. Anyway, new plugs will give you a reading on how well you are running. Don't count on old plugs to give you a good reading.
Have you fiddled with your air/mix screws? They might need to be adjusted, especially after changing to 45 pilots. I doubt if the dealer set them correctly. That might make a difference at low throttle. Excluding all other changes, the bigger your pilots, the less turns out are needed on the air screws. I think Greybeard has a good writeup on setting the airscrews. Search for it.
You might also get a little boost by pulling the snorkle from the airbox. It's an easy mod, and it's easy to put back if you don't like it.
Finally, don't worry about a little popping on deceleration. Unless it's extreme, it's normal on a well tuned engine.
Good luck, Cody
