This guy was one of the people who influenced my music. Mid sixties I played in an English invasion band, but soul music was getting more popular. I joined a soul band; complete with sax, trumpet, guitar(me) bass, drums and a Farfiesa Combo Organ played thru a Hammond cabinet. Wow, this was heaven for a 16 year old. James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Four Tops, Otis Redding, with some Rascals, Mar-Keys, etc. Even now I pop in a James Brown CD, drag out the old Strat, and can still get somewhat funky. James B was one of a kind.

Classic film for sure. One of my fondest memories of JB was a half time performance a few years back at the Super Bowl. Clad in a Baby Blue jump suit perched some 50' or so in the air on some type of scaffolding. His black patten leather pointed shoes hanging precariously off the edge screaming the tune Livin' In America. I thought the old coot was going to fall to his death at any moment. Ah yes, he was one of a kind. I also remember a late night dance show ala Soul Train called Future Shock, anyone else remember that show? RIP JB.

I worked with him a number of times through the years. I guess I'll never collect on the money he owes me now that he's gone, although I'd written it off. I still have an outstanding judgement against him.
I loved his music, but take it from someone who knows, he was a jerk that ripped a bunch of people off and had no conscience about it.

Ramsound,Sorry about your run-ins with JB. We are aware of Mr Browns drawbacks including domestic abuse but, he's gone and you can never go back.
A lot of entertainers are A$$holes, seems to come with the territory but that does not diminish their god given talent.

Bet he did. In tribute, I'm going to smoke some crack, smack the wife around and run from the cops. I guess we all have issues....
A former boss was a big fan and frequently loaned me music including Maceo Parkers CD's (he went solo when JB went to jail for a stint). Now that was some fine stuff!
I definitely want to hear Oz lay down some funk with his Strat!

He was not much of a driver, he would not have lasted long on a bike, but he sure could sing.

Ya beat me to it, Dwight. My first thought upon hearing the sad news was, 'I guess he didn't feel so good after all...'

Got to see Maceo live at SPAC a few ears ago. AMAZING stuff!! Sorta takes the JB's up a notch. Look for his "Planet Groove" cd, live in Cologne Germany. "Let's go to cologne and funk with the folks." Awesome version of Pass the Peas! Go get it. Do it.
Once station was playing all JB on the way home today. "What song you gonna play?" "I dunno but it's gonna be funky"

Drawbacks? Beating up people, drug abusing, reckless driving, evading the law, and ripping people off are drawbacks? Oh my.

That's it: "Pass the Peas", great tune (won't be able to get it out of my head now!). I'll have to look for that CD, guess it would be in the Jazz section?

Even tho he only plays 2% jazz, and 98% funky stuff, yeah it might be in jazz In fact, it was at a jazz festival I saw him! And he used that line...

We did his HV/AC work when I was a teenager. When ever we would go to service his AC he would always come out and talk with us. Some time he was sober other times he was stoned, but always fun to talk to. The house he owned then is across the street from my son’s school. Every time I drive past it I think of Mr. Brown in his silk PJ with a pink frilled robe trying to help us fix his AC. Lets just say he was not sober that day.
