Does anyone have experience with the new Scorpion line of helmets? I've seen them in bike mags, but never in person. I'm thinking about getting this one: Scorpion EXO-200 Has a full shield or visor option. DOT and SNELL rated. Pix don't seem to want to post.

I like he look of the Scorpion. I wear a Nolan full face/flip-up now that the weather has cooled. I tried a half helmet (HJC), but man is it noisy even with ear plugs I like the idea of a face shield or visor options. Mark

I can't tell you about the EXO-200 since I have the EXO-700, but if it is the same quality and fit, it will be an awesome helmet.

Now that I ride to the office occasionally on the interstate, I'm looking for more protection and this seems to straddle that line nicely. Plus better weather protection in the early Spring/Fall would be a bonus. Even with my neck curtain zipped in place, it was a bit chilly today with my DOT half helmet.
Thanks guys, good deal on the Scorpion line. Too bad none of my local dealers carry them. Guess I'll have to do mail order, helmetcity.com or the like. I have a big noggin, hopefully the fit will be OK.

I replied to your PM Al, but I'll add mine is the EXO 400 which is a pretty standard full face. Just decide what shape your head is like a long oval or more round, and you should find a good fit.

I have the 400 full face and love it. The dealer took a lot of time fitting me with different size inserts until it was just right. I did remove the "S" emblem (a little too gaudy for me)

Benny: Thanks. I will try to find the brand at one of the larger DC area shops and do a test fit versus mail order.

I would imagine someone would have them. Maybe call around first. Aparently you can even get a zebra lining for them. Just your style!!

Hey, thanks, that's pretty handy! Freestate Cycles in DC has a 4 Scorpion rating. Out local dealer has a 1 Scorpion rating, but they don't have any on the shelf.
I've never been to Freestate, but interestingly enough, they used to be the DC Triumph Dealer. The guy who owned/operated it moved just down the road from me. He ran the dealership for 30 years and is one hell of a guy with a ton of interesting tales. They dropped the Triumph line after the sale.

Not to change the subject, but the simple $8 turtle fur neck gaiters are a great cold weather compliment to a full face helmet. I pull the gaiter up on the back of my head, then over my yap, and pull the modular full face helmet on from the back toward the front. This keeps the gaiter over the ears, but still leaves plenty of room in the helmet, which isn't always the case with a full head balaclava. Although the turtle fur looks and feels like thin fleece, the wind doesn't get through them. They get the job done with very little bulk. http://www.snowshack.com/turturnecnec.html

Hmm, interesting. Very similar helmet. Reviews said it was very noisy with the shield in place. Can't find any Scorption reviews to contrast. The shield doesn't look as integrated as the Scorpion, I could see where it might whistle. The prices are about the same.

I like the recessed shield mount on the Scorpion better than the HJC. Hopefully, the wind noise would be reduced, something most reviewers mentioned on the HJC. The HJC looks to have a better vent system.
Freestate Cycle in DC carries the line ("4 Scorpion, Platinum" status) but they only stock full faced helmets. I'll try the size in full faced and have them order the helmet. They are offering the same price as I found on the web ($135).

Martin, does anyone make turtle fur vests? I find the only thing that really keeps the wind out of my chest is my rain gear.

benny, turtle fur is turtle fur. company name/product name. i have a cool fleece tank top kind of thing from a company named sahalie. i wear it when i run, as one of my layers, on cold days i've taken to wearing it, as part of my riding gear, on colder days too. it's not quite patagonia or northtface fleece quality; but it's pretty good.

I have an ex 700. Great helmet. I also have a KBC, and two Daytonas. The Scorpion is far superor toany of the others. Some things to consider in selecting helmets are shell composition (mostly for wieght), shape of your noggin, and bufeting in wind. The snell rating is preferred over the DOT, as it tests for the pull over factor, to keep the lid on your head. I chose the 700 for the composite shell, it fit my head very well, and it vents well (I'm in Texas). I also tried Aria, Shoei, and Shark. The shark was the best for my head shape, but was twice the price. You should note that even in a mfg, like Aria, different models have different shapes, and different mfg's are different shapes.

Thanks for the tips, this is my first time buying a really good helmet that must fit correctly.

Mostly forget about price (more expensive does not mean more protective or higher quality), fit and comfort has to be the #1 priority.

hey I have a fleece kinda like that too, used to wear it skiing. Now on cold days I wear a faily thin, but supposedly windstopper fleece from the Nike factory store. It's ok... But not turtle fur
I had a turtle fur hat from 8th grade, warm est hat EVER. Is their fleece different from others? Like somehow patented or something I wonder?

Find it locally and get the right size. Unless you want to support your local vendor, buy it online. I just bought a KBC FFR (full-face retractable) that I had originally given my local vendor $260 and they had to order it. 2 weeks later, they were still giving me the run-around and finally admitted that their distributor could not get it. I was not very happy but went down there and got my money back and found it online at http://www.motoxoutlet.com. Here's a pic:

Folks: I gave up trying to find a Scorpion dealer that carried any of their cruiser helmets. So I ordered my helmet from HelmetCity.com. It should be here tomorrow. Really could have used it today, we had temps right around 50 degrees here in MD. I realized with this helmet, I'll want to be able to lock it to the bike. With my skid lids and DOT half helmet, I just looped them over the saddlebag strap (which I can lock), figuring they wouldn't be stolen. This Scorpion lid is a little too valuable to risk theft. I found this website which offers a lot of lock options. I'm leaning towards the Kuryakyn ISO-Grip lock, having those grips. My fear is the helmet might contact my gas tank. Has anyone seen this lock in person? 2nd choice might be the Masterlock 4603 retractable cable to put through my sissy-bar. My saddle bags are hard mounted, so that eliminates hanging off the fender struts. Lockitt.com Website

Usually that is sooo true. However, most helmet manufacturers do not allow online vendors to discount prices online. In the store they may. For example, I went to The Helmet Shop and looked at the HJC flip Symax. Priced online at 224 in store price 206. True, most websites have free shipping and no sales tax. But if you are taking the time to go to a local vendor for a helmet for fit purposes, after pricing online, buy from him/her given their prices are no more than suggested retail price, as the amount you save online might only be enough for a french (spit) cup of expresso at the local starlicks. Yuk.
I bought a Nolan Flip face 102. Big Mistake. Seems my oval head and Nolan's round helmet don't jive. I wear hearos 32 dB ear filters. Well by the time I got home (65 miles) I swear that my ears felt like I had ridden 12 hours at 60mph+ with no ear plugs. The low frequency or booming type noise about drove me insane. Boy was Lynn surprised when we got home and I was irate! I also seemed to recall a friend saying how noisy the Nolan's were too...After I made the purchase. Oh well. The Helmet shop closed at 3pm and didn’t open again till Monday. I had no idea if they would take returns/exchanges so, here it is my b'day, I'm pissed and thanks to that 229 lid, I've got a wicked headache and Lynn is worried. Time to get pissed. I look in the bar and darn it if I have only 1 shot of Evan Williams left. I pull out the white rum (For guest mind you. Rednecks prefer dark rum) and then I ask Lynn, "Do we have any other whiskey"? Yes. We have Marker's Mark. All right! Well, Lynn drove to Grandpa's Steakhouse that night.
Fast forward to Monday morning...
I call the Helmet shop at quarter till ten. They answer and say yes, I remember you and Lynn and yes we will accept returns. Yahoo dude! What are you hours as I’ll ride up Tuesday being as it is supposed to rain noon today? 10 till whenever say Bill. Thanks for answering your phone dude! What is up with that? Well we had a puter software crash...Oops. I hate those too.
Bill says send it back via mail or ride up being as how you want to exchange it anyway. I says see you tomorrow!
So helmets are a precarious purchase. Just go to webbikeworld and read about them. Sizes vary within manufacture’s products, noise levels vary from rider to rider and fit is something you have to experience. Even good fit doesn’t ensure acceptable noise levels. I do know that 32db filters and helmets should allow one to hear there own 125db horn at 60 mph!
Got lucky this time. And I'll look into the symax as well as the kbs while I'm there. Remember match the helmet shell shape to your noggin. I didn’t and almost had to use server space in wojo's section. Heck I still might have to if for some reason they don't like what I will be exchanging.

I agree for the most part moe. On my new helmet, I was so pissed that the local vendor jerked me around for so long, I decided to see about online. The retail was $249 everywhere and found it as stated above for $167!! I was a little reluctant but I called and talked to the guy running the place and he accepted no argument returns so all I would have been out was the shipping. Inspected the helmet when I got it and it wasn't a second, came in original box, all paperwork, plastic covers, and helmet bag. I am completely satisfied....

After a very long stint without a bike, I found myself at one of the local dealers shopping for a new helmet. I had decided to not be too stingy and get something decent. A nice young sales guy let me try on all kinds and makes, but convinced me that there were some great reviews on the Scorpion. I bought the 400 series in matt black. It came with a clear shield and I opted to get another mirrored shield. I was very pleased to get out of there for $120.
So far I am really impressed. The fit is great and I can’t believe how well it seals compared my old helmets of the past.
I haven’t yet quite figured out the ventilation system though. It has four switch openings in the front, but it is not so easy for me to tell if they are open or shut while under way. I’ve mostly ridden in cooler conditions 40-50 F and I am hoping that during those hot summer days I’ll be able to sense a bit of a draft.

Helmet didn't show today. 30's and windy this evening, would have been a cool test ride!
I gave up on getting a helmet at a dealer. Two visits, no helmet or any sense they wanted to order one for me to check out. They each gave Scorpion kudo's for the quality. My intown dealer said they were new and so was that EXO-200. I read about that helmet the first of last year, guess it's new to them.
The only "3 scorpion" (nee star) dealer was a 2 hour drive from my house and I just couldn't seem to fit in a ride out (plus a 2nd drive to pick up the helmet). They said they don't stock the cruiser helmets. I guess most cruiser folks are buying the low dollar DOT-only half-helmets. I like the Scopion because it was DOT and SNELL rated.

The booklet was pretty lame. I thought it would give some suggestions on which vents to open and when, but there was none of that.
If you look close there are some marks on I think the upper center vent, indicating open and closed position. Trouble is that you have to memorize the positions. It's really no big deal and I supposed other helmets are somewhat the same in design. I simply expected to get a real blast of air when I opened a vent, but that did not happen. Gerry

Funny. Real funny. I think the vents are mostly an area for turbulence more than air flow. My old HJC AC-10 had a chin vent, cheeks vents and a forehead vent. I think the only time I noticed a difference was , wait, let me think, dang. I can't think of any. Way more a psychological thing than anything else. My new HJC Symax well, it doesn’t really need any... At least I don't get the sonic booms that the Nolan caused. What a relief to hear ones horn at 80mph! Hum it does have a top of the helmet ridiculous vent.
I like HJC lids. Priced right, good fit & 100% Korean.

You hit it Moe! It has to be psychological more than anything. I’ve already spent too much precious riding time trying to notice some difference. I find myself fiddling with the vents and not paying attention to where I’m going. Ended up in Lexington last time out.
I probably just need to ride faster.

The one vent I KNOW is open is the chin vent. If I have it open, when riding I can open my mouth and it inflates my cheeks

Update, 1/12: Helmet arrived yesterday. Large is too small...returned today for the XL size. That sets me back $12, which I guess is still less than two trips to DC to the closest dealer. Looks like a very well built helmet. Visor very slick. Vents look effective. Also ordered the Kuryakyn Kewlock to secure the bike to my Iso-grip. Got it on Ebay for $38 delivered, saved a few bucks. It's been too cold and/or wet to ride lately so I guess the wait isn't a problem.

The sizes are crazy. My local dealer had them in-stock and I tried a large at first. He told me they run small and I finally ended up with XXL. Despite what my wife says, I do not have a big head.

Yeah, the sizing charts didn't work so well for me. According to Scorpions site, I was on the bottom of the Large size @ 59 mm. On HJC's chart, that was an XL. I found a lot of HJC helmets and the XL fit fine, Large too tight. The Large Scorpion ended up being identical to the Large HJC, too tight. That's why I would have preferred getting it locally, but not to be.

I had tried some of the HJC helmets too and their sizes made more sense. I was embarrassed to think that I wore an XXL, but I've almost gotten over it.
Good Luck!
