I was thumbing through Fortune mag (Nov 27) and towards the back I found an article on the guys who are resurrecting Indian. Their names are Stephen Julius and Steve Heese. It said the first model should be on the market in late 2007.

The article said these guys were able to buy the assets, but it took a while to get rights to the name. Some media guy had the name and wouldn't give it up. Then he sold out to Rupert Murdock, who was willing to sell off the Indian name.

Well Bill, my guess is that unless Messrs Julius and Heese are as loaded as Mr. Murdock(or a certain John Bloor, of whom we all know and respect) these two gentlemen are doomed to the same fate as Kenny Dreer(late of Norton's aborted comeback attempt), and the Hanlon Brothers(of the Excelsior-Henderson debacle of a few years ago)
If these gentlemen start to sell stock in order to fund their enterprise...well, I hate to say this(I really do, as it would be great to see it succeed) BUT...adios amigos.
These types of things take an enormous amount of moola JUST to get off the ground, LET ALONE the teething problems of the product AND the dealership requirements involved.
I remember reading a report a few years ago that stated our BILLIONAIRE "savior" Mr.Bloor invested GOBS(now THERE'S a precise figure for ya, huh?) of his own money before he was "in the black", almost 15 years after he initially bought the rights to the Triumph name in the late Eighties.

I think that these two people are the same ones that have brought Chris-Craft back from the brink to the forefront of watercraft and they apparently do indeed have very deep pockets..of course time will tell.

I agree. I have been following their progress since the start of their involvement and it appears that they are pretty successful turnaround artists. It would seem that these guys are treading carefully and that they are trying to extract every concession possible in order to make the operation a success. They also have the recent Indian debacle that presents a useful study case from which they can draw knowledge(including hints of which mistakes they should avoid). I personally hope that the marque can be resurrected (successfully) as I have always thought it was one of the coolest one's around (alongside our own and various others).

In my marketing class one of the things discussed was Mr. Dreers price setup and marketing. He was well on his way to selling a good motorcycle but he set the price far above what the demand was for the bike. If He would have limited the amount of high end parts and kept the the strong engine design, he could have sold more bikes through dealers or through angreement with Mr. Bloor(that's what I would have pushed for.....a contract to share the profits for use of my engine design). When you stop and think about it we might have gotten a 80 HP engine that came stock with the bike....Angelis

Yes, they are the Chris Craft folks with mighty deep pockets and are avid motorcyclists. A very good combination for success. Over in Auburn, NY, about 25 miles away, there was a Chris Craft factory, closed and became something else (Bombardier I think - who actually thought about making Victory's there) then Chris Craft again. Anyway, it has been abandoned for about 3 years and there is a lot of talk and speculation, and rumor, about making Indian motorcycles in there, so the locals over near Auburn NY say. My fingers are crossed. How cool would it be to have the new factory right down the road from me?
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

To add to this (and to what Pat already said about deep pockets), it appears that Mr Dreer also seemed to run out of cash. I recall (perhaps others on this board also do) the Norton Company requesting deposits for the bikes around a year or year and a half ago. A sure sign that they needed the cash to continue or at least that was the way I interpreted it, at the time.

Back in July when I first heard of this, I gave them 30 months until they were selling off their assets. Target date: January '09, 26 months left.
