In the coming weeks, if a certain dude from my home state of California happens to register here with the pseudonym of "KramerBiker", "CosmoTriumph" or ANYTHING along those lines, and THEN wants to start "postin' stuff" around here, Well....I'd keep a VERY close eye on anything that he may contribute, AND that "hammer" o' yours at the ready, if I were YOU!!!
Just givin' ya a "heads-up" here, guys.
THAT'S all I wanted to say.(for now)

Dwight, He's not the real Michael Richards is he? Is he likely to go off on a racist rant after being heckled from this forum? If so, the moderators are our first line of defense. Thanks for being our on the spot site watchdog.

wish there was as much outrage in the press and public about comedians on Def Comedy Jam. I've watched a little of this on HBO late at night, and without exception, black comedians toss around the "N-word" about as much as the word "the", and it's "OK". About the only people I've ever heard express outrage publicly are comedians like Bill Cosby. If that word is taboo, it should be taboo for everyone. Enough with double standards. Having said that though, he did go off the deep end, a simple and polite "F-you mother fxxxxxxx!!" would have sufficed. Another Mel Gibson/John Kerry moment...

Ole Bill Cosby has been the voice of reason for the black community for some time now. However, I do not think that community is listening to him. I think they view him largely as an old fogie.
Sad.

I don't know Dwight, Couple years ago I met clinical psychologist from the midwest. And even though she rides a sportster, I only wash my hands 20-25 times a day now . I could make a discrete referral?? BTW: I also like Cosby's "take responsibility for yourself" message. JH

Bill Cosby is one of my absolute favorite comedians; super funny without getting obscene or offensive. Steven Wright is another one of my favorites.

I know what ya mean, Soren and Paula. Steven Wright, the master of the deadpan delivery, has been one of the funniest comedians around for years. But for some reason you don't see too much of the guy around anymore. And regarding Bill Cosby....I think you guys are absolutely right there too, especially you Kevin. The "out of touch, old fogie" slap that he's gotten recently is a "cop out"(to use another "old fogie" expression, I guess) that was thrown at him EXACTLY because of the victim mentality that still seems so entrenched in much of the poorer black communities, or indeed in ANY of the poorer neighborhoods that dot our country, regardless of the prevalent skin tone there within. Cheers, Dwight (WELL...I guess THIS makes ME a "racist" now, huh?! 'Cuz...as Greg pointed out above, I'm a hairy white man, and so I "ain't allowed" to make this observation) (GAAAAD I abhor Political Correctness...It kind'a stiffles dialogue a bit...don't it?!)

It's interesting to note that folks seem to to equate someone's use of a racial epithet with being racist. Curiously, this is not necessarily the case. When folks are angry, they tend to use emotive and aggressive language that they feel will yield the "best" results. It is precisely because certain words carry strong emotions that people use them. For example, folks who have had a stroke can find that they have great difficulty speaking, but amazingly are able to use profanities easily. Similarly, one of the characteristics of Tourette syndrome is that profanities are used inappropriately - folks with Tourette rarely shout "Oh heck," "Goodness me," or "Go away." So when someone gets angry, they can use highly emotive words without that necessarily indicating some deeper-seated attitude. Although the existential reality of someone screaming profanities may be to cause another person to be shocked, offended, angry, or upset, the form of the words used can be irrelevent. Techinically, it is the difference between using a words denotation (what a word actually means) and a word's connotation (what associations a word may have). In the case of profanities, the connotation is a emotional state. When someone gets very angry and calls someone a "b*st*rd," they are not using the literal denotation of the word ("you were born outside of wedlock") but its affective connotation ("Im using a hurtful word that hopefully hurts you.") People who choose to analyze verbal behavior only at the level of literal meaning are failing to understand the real complexities of language. Calling some an "a**hole" is done not to reflect that the person looks like the someone's rear end but to hurt them emotionally by choosing an emotionally laden word. Anyone wanting the full one-hour lecture on sociolinguistics and profanity can send me a private message Suffice to say that although "Kramer" may have gotten angry, we do him a great injustice if we try to read much more into it that that. I'm sure most people have heard this argument before. "If they can say it, why can't we?". This is probably the best way it was explained to me when I was younger: Let's say you call your friend a fu**in' a**hole - he probably won't get mad. Guys just talkin' sh*t to each other, right? Now if you were out with your friend, and some random stranger called him a fu**in' a**hole, do you think he's going to have the same reaction?

Jaime,
It's different...all black guys are not friends, and all white guys are not their enemies. The observation here is that if the word itself is supposed to be taboo...how can it be taboo when it's OK for blacks to use it on each other? If it's a racially derogatory word, then the same furor should hit whether it's used by a black guy or a white guy. It's double standard, pure and simple, IMHO.

Absolutely not. Which illustrates the fact that words in themselves are not the issue but the connotations and emotional baggage that go with them. Toss into the mix that who says what to whom and where, and you see how complex things get. It's common practice for media sources to take a sound-bite, choose an "interpretation" and procede to wave it around like a baseball bat in the hope that someone's head will stop it. However, when the choice is between "The O'Reilly Minute" and a 1-hour textual deconstruction of the possible meanings of a "Yee Haww!!!," the Factor wins hands down.
It's human nature to try to reduce everything to a black and white proposition but unfortunately the world comes in all shades of gray. And least anyone should be misreading my comments as political in nature, they are, in fact, semiotic in intent, therefore transcending banal partisan broohaha.

If you want an answer to this debate, read "Ni##er" by Randall Kennedy. It's actually a great book that examines the cultural differences and usages of the word.

The world is filled with unfair double standards. Without getting into a political rant (Which would get deleted anyhow.) Just look at who is allowed to say what, and who is called defamatory names just for defending themselves. Like Orwell's pigs in Animal Farm, we are all equal but some are just more equal than others. Political correctness and moral relativism have gotten us to the point that certain people are immune from criticism regardless of the falsity and vileness of their words. Politically correct lies can be trumpeted from the rooftops while obvious truths must be left unsaid for fear of offending the hypersensitive.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Right you are, Keith.
I TOO had to thumb through my trusty Oxford American Dictionary to find the meaning o' THAT word, which our resident lexicographer threw our way.
I was FIRST thinkin' that because "semiotic" rhymes with "idiotic" that ol' Siggy here was tryin' to say somethin' ELSE about the human condition.(or some kind'a mutually beneficial relationship as in "SYMBIOTIC")
BUT, after review, I gots to thank him. I now know the meaning of yet ANOTHER word in this hodgepodge known as the English Language.
THANKS Siggy!!!
Cheers,
Dwight

Believe it or not, it's straight out of my noggin. I won't say that I take credit for its originality, as I'm sure many many people have said similar things since the dawn of man. To me, it's just common sense. You don't have to go to Yale to find wisdom, just open your eyes to the world around you and watch people, nature, etc... It's kind of like throwing sh#t, throw enough of it against a wall, and some of it is surely going to stick (and I KNOW that is not an original thought!)

The beauty of the English language is that we freely use words and concepts from EVERYONE. Unlike French and Spanish speakers (and a lot of others as well) we have no language purity movement. If a concept is difficult to translate to English we just incorporate the words. It can make for some interesting moments too. Like when I heard a tourist from the Scottish highlands speaking with an individual whose speaks mostly in Gangsta,

After interpreting it, I sense that there was something semiotic in intent within that statement.
Now how's that for a Greek borrowing a Greek word from our British friend Siggy who resides in the USA.

Michael Richards made a mistake and he's been publicly chastised and finally apologized, let him move on, semiotics aside. I think a couple hundred years of opression give Afro-Americans the right to use the "N" word if if they want. I'd rather get back to one liners from Stephen Wright or Bill Cosby... how about from one of Dr. Cosby's old comedy albums "I don't eat brains and eggs..I don't like to eat something someones been thinking with..."

Four years ago I was in a bar in Minneapolis during a karaoke night. To this day, I shudder when I recall the performance of "Julie." She was five feet tall, four feet wide, and no concept of the meaning of the word "tune." For seven hours - or at least what seemed like seven hours - we had to listen to her abuse AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." If only someone had done as the song suggested....

Well, ONCE AGAIN, ironically, after you brought up the topic of "train wrecks" and all, there WAS something I could never quite figure out.....My most requested songs back then were always, "Casey Jones", followed by, "Hit The Road, Jack"!!!
Hummmm....come to THINK of it, they really WEREN'T "requested" by ANYBODY...except that second song!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
