First, Thanks to all of you! I have found a few things here to help me with my 6000 mile service.

After calling my dealer and finding out that the 6000 mile service cost 230 bucks, I decided to do it myself. I have always worked on my own cars and even restored a couple so I thought it couldn’t be too hard. And it has been pretty easy, but I have a couple of things I need to ask about.

I have the torque sheet, (thanks to whoever did this) which fasteners do you guys recommend for me to check? It would take a while if I went to check everything on the list.

Also, the last thing it says on the list is Air box hoes-drain, I see it and it is connected with no leaks. Do I need to remove it and check for clogs or is a visual good enough?

I also cleaned the bike and did a spoke check. I left off the oil change, it was recently changed over to synthetic a couple thousand miles ago and I did not pull the plugs. It runs way to good to even mess with. The only thing I found was the rear outer brake pad was 2 mm thick and I am going to order new pads now. It has been quite enjoyable wrenching on this bike.

Thanks! Dean
Here is a pic in the shop!

A lot of the fasteners in the torque list will not be available unless you break down the motor and that would not be good!

6000 miles is a good time to check all exterior fasteners for torque. It doesn't take that long. Spend a couple of hours getting to know your bike and the size of the different nuts and bolts. A good torque wrench is essential and watch out for the engine casings. Don't over-torque. There's been some who have stripped out a bolt.

Yo dude you can cut the cost of 6000 mile service over half just do own oil change. My 6000 svs final cost $55.00. $230 seems very very high.

Okay, off-topic but I'll bite. What's with the handle "vwone?" I went to your web page and not a VW in site!

Friar John, about ten years ago I was big into VWs. I owned 2 or 3 at a time and had several friends that bought them as well. That is also my email and I have just kept it over the years. Yesterday while riding I did see a 66 for sale, but I would rather spend money on the America instead. Dean

I was big into VWs 'awhile' ago. Had several bugs, three vans, and one very sweet '64 Karmann Ghia. Don't have any pics of mine but it looked like this (mine was bright green):

Dropped a 1600cc motor in it (had to mill out the transaxle housing) and boy would that thing go!! Loved that little car.

One of these days..........

Cool. I've had a bunch of old VWs too. Now I have a couple 914s and my main cage is a '94 Golf.

Good looking Ghia! Since we are showing pics, here is a 68 European (meaning it was imported at some point and has less features than American model) that I had for a couple of years. I worked in the car audio industry and this was the car I used to show the equipment I sold. Great little car, 1835, engle 120 cam, dellorto carbs, electronic ignition, narrowed front end and a ton of little stuff. Without the stereo it would fly! Just in case some one asks in this pic, it had 6 15” JL subs, 2 JL 6.5 in the doors, 4” JL in the kicks, 2 sets of 1” in the dash + kicks and about 3000 watts of PPI power. It was good for about 150 db. I almost forgot 4 batteries. Yes I made a good living making all of those boom cars every one hates. Dean
