Still consider myself new here and learning what is "Forumly correct".So it seems some non motorcycle related topics are exceptable? Music, bad jokes, movies, sports. But mentioning a double murderer or critisizing loathsome TV network practices is unacceptable?
For the record I sent an E-mail to the creeps at FOX expressing my disgust.

Now i'll make this post accectable.

Q:What would you get if Jim Brown killed 3 people?

A: A NEW NFL RECORD

We had a LOT of discussions going on that proved nothing except getting people riled up, then name calling, then people getting offended, etc. We decided that if people really ant to debate politics, touchy subjects, religion, etc, they can start a yahoo forum or something and do it there. Pretty simple. Do a search on "the ban" and you'll have a whole night of reading ahead of you. Point is, we try to keep it FUN here.

I don't see the controversy. It's not like anyone is going to defend OJ. That was always the problem with religion and politics - polarized views and beliefs. People dug in their heals and spewed the same tripe over and over again. But locking threads about OJ is retarded. I guess this really is just the "Happy Fun Time Forum" now.

It just occurred to me that some of those news stories about motorcyclists getting killed and the cager/perpetrator getting away with a slap on the wrist garnered stronger reactions than this OJ crap. Next time one of those stories gets posted, motorcycle-related or not, I'll expect to see it locked. I mean, if people getting agitated is the litmus test and all.

Fighting between Vendors (very understandable to delete) I was very suprised to see how far some went with that one.
A huge political fight (can go somewherelse)

How are we supposed to get to know and work with each other if we can't even talk though?

Said it before and I'll say it again. Go make an F-ing yahoo forum called bonnevillamericadotcombitchandmoan.org and I'll post a sticky thread with a link to it.

FJ after all you went thru as a mod I'd expect a different reaction from you.

******.....someone lock all these threads. Better yet delete them. Do any of these whiners have a clue what it takes to deal with all this nonsense!!!! This is NOT the place for it. This is a motorbike forum. People like Benny should be rewarded for their hard work. After running a Jeep forum for years and owning a bunch of gaming servers with forums I understand and personally would not deal with any of this crap. I commend you Benny and the other moderators. Don't let it discourage you. Keep up the good work!!!!!

Really.

I'm all for standards and consistency. I don't like a lot of rules but I like whatever few rules there are to be applied consistently. Originally the standard was that anything offensive was not allowed to protect the women and children who may visit the site. Fine. Enforcing that was a fulltime job all by itself, but worth it because that's what Robert wanted. Then I chose to resign from the Lounge in the face of rampant political and religious arguments. The remaining moderators decided to ban politics and religion. Fine. Now, apparently any discussion of non-offensive, non-religious and non-political current events are to be banned if anyone gets a little agitated. Did I miss a memo? Am I really out of line? I think I'm drawing logical conclusions here. Just seeking clarification in the policy.

When I moderated here, I tried to not lock threads unless they were spinning their wheels or unless people were attacking each other. If someone started to get a little agitated, a simple word or three from me (showing but not swinging the Hammer of Smitingâ„¢) would usually settle them down and get things back on track. Again, as I said in the other thread, this is the Lounge. A certain amount of leeway in subject matter, within defined guidelines, should be allowed.

Look, I know moderating is a thankless job. Seems to me that well-defined guidelines would help make the job easier, not harder. Last time I checked the AUP hadn't been updated to reflect the politics and religion ban. Might want to see after that...

Thanks for pointing that out Kars. This, as I've been told SOOO many times, is a bike only forum. Therefore, we shouldn't see stuff about Blue Moon beer(which is good by the way), jokes, unless specifically bike related, or shocking onesself with stunguns, etc....
Quote:

My friend tried my stun gun on himself. "Only" a 40k volt model though. Funny as hell to all that witnessed. Not so funny to poor Tom. It was almost as funny as the time he sprayed my mace out the window of a moving car. He is a rather intelligent person, just not much common sense. Use to keep a croc for a pet in a bedroom of a house we rented together. Thankfully he does not ride!

I agree, the moderator job is a thankless one. As for namecalling about all of us "whiners", yep, that certainly meets the intent of the AUP. I find it funny that us whiners are constantly chastised about our conduct, but it's the "non-whining bike forum only" crowd who introduce equally as many non-bike topics, so enough of the hypocrisy. Frankly, this whole argument, and lately the behavior and attitude on this site is getting about as stale as the old now-verboten Political discussions-FROM ALL SIDES!! Just my worthless 2 cents, but it seems EVERYONE HERE, Mods included, needs to take about 2 steps back from the site, and take a deep breath. Again, just my opinion, but it seems things lately on here are going the wrong way. You may respect my opinion or flame me, I can't control that, and frankly don't care. I will simply give back the same level of respect that I am treated with. And, I kind of thought that was the whole intent of the AUP (at least the way I read it), that we treat each other with respect, and those that step out of line get thumped, GOOD AND HARD. Now it's come down to slamming shut the door on any topic deemed "unacceptable", even if all members are behaving, and even if all members are in agreement on the topic. I don't know where this site is heading, and it was a lot more enjoyable at one time (even when there weren't heated debates), now it just feels like we have to weigh each and every word for fear of smiting. So much for a bunch of adults....

Grump,
I don't think anywhere in any of my posts that I attacked the job that the mods are doing. Personally, I'd be all in favor of a "cross-the-line" and you're outta here policy. Let people talk about what they want in the Lounge, anything that crosses into a personal attack gets that person the boot. Seems to work elsewhere. Like I said, you can flame me for my opinion with the "too bad" attitude. Seems the only people who are respected or whose opinions matter are those who side with the moderators. The rest of us are just troublemakers and whiners. Feel free to yank my membership, if this is how has to be. For those of you whom I've met and became friends with over the past couple years, I'll keep in touch, I've got your e-mail addys! Take Care and Ride Safe!

Adey, I guess it depends on which side of the "line" you're on. From my side that is the perception (and this isn't just me, I get similar feedback from others). Sorry, that's how it seems.

I think this is part of the problem. Not to say that it's a bad idea, but it leaves it up to each person to interpret what level of respect was given or taken. I may think I'm typing something perfectly respectful, but (since we're dealing ONLY in text here) it gets precieved a different way, and then it snowballs. So yeah, in theory you have a good policy, but it doesn't always work out unfortunately.

I hear ya FJ, thanks for clarifying. The way I have always viewed the "ban" is not so much of a ban as a notification of everyone being on notice. And I've considered it to be much less specific than religion and politics. I've looked for anything that could be offensive, like you said earlier, and I consider a lot of the back n forth BS to be offensive. Just my opinion... And if I see something GOING in that direction, I nuke it. Why wait for it to get there? Seems to me it's almost too late then ya know?

Blue and I are just dandy, although she is up for the winter. Next winter I'll be having a proper garage to store her in, plus some good winter clothing so's that I can be more like Adey (although I'm not shaving my head!)

I've managed to keep my mouth, or fingers, in check thru this whole thing....but, if you want to add one more subject to the acceptable use, poitaclly correct thing, then how about Harley Bashing. It took me a long time to finally own my first HD some 20 years ago, I like them, I own 4 and I like my Triumph too. I'm proud of all my bikes, and to constantly come to this site, and read the continual HD put down, seems a bit much, when a big deal is being made of the other 'taboo' topics. I even thought that I might get a 'Happy B-Day' after being here for so long....
OH Well, that's enough whining from me.

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

We don't actually troll through the birthday list every day looking for people to greet. You get a greeting when someone notices a little cake icon next to your nick on a message you've posted. If you didn't get one, maybe you need to post more often

A fine suggestion!!

Here's a quote from it.

Holy Cow! Guys, it is really distressing to see this. I still enjoy the site very much, but then, I don't come here for anything but motorcycles. If I want all those other things, I go elsewhere so it doesn't bother me at all. I don't want to upset anyone, and I hope you all will stay as this site is great because of all the input from so many different people. Are there other sites those who want something different can visit? I bet there are, but I don't want to see them leave her because of it! I just hope that everyone can make up soon, because it really is upsetting to see folks treating each other poorly. I want to say I appreciate you all, moderators included, for your contributions.

Actually Adey, I believe I did that just this morning in my PM to you, but apparently this completely missed the target. The "insult" was meant in an honest attempt at humor to lighten up the otherwise anal retentive attitude and atmosphere around here, and move on with this whole sorry subject. But I'm done apologizing, done putting up with the whole nonsense. I've read Sandmans post about our "rights, or lack thereof", and he's absolutely right. I choose to excercise my right, the only one I have, and leave. You can tell me that the opinion that I and others have is wrong, but it isn't wrong. Sometimes the truth stinks. Sorry that there isn't room for other than a very narrow view of what is acceptable or not acceptable. Please delete my membership.

I don't have the authority to do that.

Even in your 'apology' PM today, you had to have a dig there too.

BTW, how did your apology this morning excuse you for comments made at 7:24pm tonight?
Apologising ready knowing you couldn't stop yourself perhaps?
Whatever!
You made my decision much easier too mate.

Well, Adey, I don't believe that was a dig, and I'm sorry if you took it that way. It was an honest attempt at an apology, maybe hamfisted, but honest nonetheless, because I sensed the tension. I think, if you look back at even the most heated debates I've been involved in, that I have never made it personal or attacked anyone, even after being attacked (as was the case with Mad52 about 2 years ago), and that is just not in my nature, even when I get really pissed.
Not sure what "decision" it is that you're referencing.

No apology for "knowing I couldn't stop myself", since, as mentioned this morning, everything is meant in jest, not mean-spirited in any way. If I meant it as a personal attack, I wouldn't have bothered with the emoticons. If the emoticons are meaningless, why have them? Thought that was really the point of them, to convey a certain tone so that the intent couldn't be misconstrued, but apparently that isn't the case.

We limeys, poms, what ever else you wanna call us don't rant about our political system or any of our more imfamous criminals, I haven't seen any of our Antipodean members (the Aussies to those who are wondering) do it either. That's the two biggest nationalites outside the US and I didn't wish to leave anyone else out, but I could sit here all night and type it all out, but my keyboard batteries would run out (its a cordless one before you ask)
I don't know whather that because they really don't give a stuff about politics or realise this is not the place for it.
Which it isn't.

Talk bikes. Talk about what you're gonna do over the winter while you're not riding. Talk about beer. Talk about Jaffa cakes. Talk about work (if you really have to). Talk about anything else.

Just don't talk about stuff you know is gonna get the thread locked.

Please.

Love you all forever if you stop it...
