My 17 yr old son and I were out enjoying the absolutely beautiful weather here in Northern Virginia yesterday. Decided to head up to Thornton Gap and give it a look. Traffic was pretty light so we kicked it in pretty good... son leading the way on his Yamaha FZ6 and me trailing on the BA. I stayed back a respectable distance watching him do his thing in the twisties and then decided to actually try and keep up... headed into a nice right/left switchback at a pretty good clip and low and behold scrapped the heel of my left boot about half way into the sweep left. It kind of startled me a little then I thought... WTF I DID IT! Anyway, we got to the top and my son pulled over and I pulled over next to him... he gave me a big high five (he said he saw me in his mirror!). Made me feel pretty good!

If I remember correctly, you did pretty good going up 211 on the Skyline ride. Where is Thornton Gap?

Thornton Gap is the top of 211 where Skyline Drives crosses over 211 (basically where the entrance to the park is). You should have been with us! A MAJOR difference from last weekend when it was 25 degrees up there.

I would have loved to, but didn't know you were riding and I promised Kevin (Pokey) I’d hook up with him to let him hear the D&D’s. I have a feeling that we won’t see a day that warm again until next spring. If anyone in this area didn't get out on the scooter for a while on Saturday, they missed a great day....

I have to admit that I actually started the weekend early too. Rode the bike to work on Friday... around 1 o'clock I'm working on a report and look up out the window at one of the most beautiful days I think I've ever seen. Anyway, all of a sudden I start feeling really sick. So I shut down the puter, tell my boss I'm feeling ill and that I think I'm going to head home to lay down (which I did about dark 30 when I finally actually made it to the house). For some strange reason the old BA just kept making turns down roads I hadn't been on before! Damn British bike has a mind of it's own.

Saturday was a good day. I heard some rumblings about a possible Harpers Ferry trip, so jumped on the bike and headed up 15 to Leesburg, 7 to 9 to Hillsboro, then Harpers Ferry Rd up to 340. Absolutely beautiful day and the park was letting veterans in free to boot. Hung out in town for a while looking for Triumphs, drinking one-or-two local stouts, then split for a wonderful ride home. Saw plenty of HD's and crotch-rockets. Hope to have a few more good days like that, before the ice cometh.

Years ago I used to live in Lovettsville, Virginia right off of 15. Reading these posts makes me remember what a beautiful area that was. I hear it has changed alot since the 80's. When I was there it was still very rural. Now I hear it's not so far from the modern world. I'll have to get back to Skyline Drive sometime, it sure is beautiful!
