Last sunday, as I was "spiriting"(okay...I was riding well over the posted speed limit, okay?!...but I like that friggin' word...so shoot me) down Angeles Crest Highway on my old '70 Triumph 650 "Streettracker" while on the annual British Motorcycle ride here in SoCal, I remembered why exactly riding motorcycles on mountain roads is so much more fun than driving a car down the same stretch of asphalt.
Ever try "late apexing" with a friggin' car on a two-lane mountain road? NO? Well, of course not. You are pretty much locked into one line with the width of your vehicle and those four wheels under you, aren't cha?!
But, on a bike...you get to "play" with a whole 10 feet(for those non-Americans who actually learned that d*mn french-invention, the Metric System...about 3 Meters, or so) and thus you have many and varied "lines of attack" in which to chose as your course around those curves.
What fun!!! Variety truly IS the "spice of life".
Cheers, Dwight (disclaimer: For your health and the safety of others, this "variety" should never exceed 8/10th of your abilities and/or what road conditions would dictate)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I went through school using both systems but I can see 10 feet in my mind's eye, I can't see 3m!
BTW: Q: Isn't the metric system something that the French invented?
A: The French invented the original version of the system in the late 1700's. A few units have continued from that time essentially unchanged (such as the meter). However, the modern metric system, called SI, has many important differences from that early system. The SI has been developed by scientists from around the world, including the United States. It has more precise unit definitions than the original metric system, as well as additional units. It is a modern system in use throughout the world, including the United States, and so it is now no more French than it is American or Chinese.
Anywho ... yeah, generally, any given road is better ridden than driven.

Rather depends on the car dont you think Dwight.
Not knowing the road your talking about, but IF some one was to give me the choice of riding a Triumph through Deals Gap or take a Ferrari Modena through the gap, i know what i would take. And i wouldn't need a helmet.
Of course, i do know what you are getting at, but I get a lot of pleasure driving cars. Particually nice cars. Offer me a Ford Escort and the Honda Cub suddenly looks rather exciting, but i cant think of many bikes that would steel me away from an E-Type.

How true Dwight. When's the last time you heard of anybody "spiriting" down the road in their F-150 to get some milk Do you have a pic of your 650 in the photo gallery? Put it on this thread if you do...I never know how to get in to specific picture in the photo gallery.

I agree with you Dwight, (not often I do ) I have to say, I am sure glad all I have to do is ride out my driveway and I am there.

Sorry Rich, but when we americans are out in the outfield(hey...this is startin' to sound like that explanation of Cricket that Adey supplied me over in that "Ashes" thread, doesn't it?...well, they say baseballs granddaddy WAS Cricket, ya know), we NEVER use our cars while "shagging" fly balls. So, I have NO idea what are talkin' 'bout here, buddy!!!(hmmmm...must be some kind'a "limey-talk" for "somethin' else", huh?!)
And Mark...oh YEAH! I could have a tremendous amount o' fun with an E-type(or a big Austin-Healey or a Beck 550 Spyder, just to name a few of the hundreds of different "fun" cages available out here) TOO, but as you know, besides that "extra bit of tarmac" you can "play with"(as I mentioned originally) you can't lean those contraptions over and scrape parts like you can with a (motor)bike!
Cheers,
Dwight
(I threw in that "motor" part 'cuz I knew you and Richard here would feel more at home if I included it...and also to keep this stupid running joke o' mine about how we "english-speakers", depending on where you live, use different words for things, goin'!)

I think that you will find that the origins of baseball were from Rounders ( a game usually played by school-girls!!)
