K&N does not carry a stock replacement air filter for the Triumph America/Speedmaster bikes. For any parts not found on their website they do recommend the following:

No product shown for your vehicle? Recommend one & we will notify you when it is released!

I say that we should all e-mail K&N, and ask that they develop a "stock" replacement air filter for our bikes. This would be a great aftermarket product, and a benefit to performance. Like their website claims you'll receive a product that gives more power, never needs to be replaced, is washable/reusable, and improves gas mileage. They already offer an excellent oil filter, so why not the air filter? Please join in the effort to get K&N make an air filter for the Triumph America/Speedmaster bikes that benefits us all!

E-mail your recommendation to: tech@knfilters.com

"UNI" washable filters are kind of the standard for motorcycles. They have a model that fits our bikes, not sure it's worth the effort for the K&N drop-in. NEITHER will give you any performance improvements, but should last the lifetime of the bike and IF oiled properly will filter better than the OEM paper element.

"NEITHER will give you any performance improvements..."

It would be interesting to do some air flow tests at higher rpms (or greater pressure drops) with both these filters compared to stock ones. The aftermarket ones just might breath a little better, I'm guessing (especially if they have a larger filtering area).

They probably flow a little better but how much that translates into actual performance (mph or mpg) of some kind I'm skeptical of as well. It seems to me the best advantage to these filters is they are cleanable and reusable for not a great deal more $$ than the disposable stock filter. For me this means I'm more likely to take the thing out and clean it every 5k instead of waiting until 12k to just replace it.

What a great idea writing to K & N. I did just that this morning. I put a great letter together telling them that all my personal vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles) have K & N air filters. My 1973 Triumph Bonneville chopper has two K & N air filters. I added that there are many Triumph owners that would benefit from this product. So lets see what happens.

jazz,
I rememeber reading a very interesting experiment on the oiled filters vs the dry papers. The final result, of a scientifically controlled experiment showed that the best performance was gained using the stock paper filters in almost every application they tried it in. The guys that did it ran a huge construction company and spend thousands of dollars a week on replacing air filters. The oiled filters, they used K&N nad Uni filters, all failed miserably as they all allowed much larger particles to come through the filters, requiring more frequent replacement and much more friction damage to the motors. They used them in large earth moving equipment, and their fleet of work trucks, big and small. In every case the paper was shown to work better at filtering, the sole purpose of any air filter.
I can't for the life of me find the link but if you do some searching it will show up, it was called something along the lines of "K&N exposed" It was well writen and made sence to me.
With that said, I still have the K&N air filters on Speedy.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

I just got a reply from K & N about getting air filters for the 2003 TBA. They say it is difficult to get OE information for the Triumphs. They're asking for the part number for the air filter for the 2003 TBA, would anyone know the number off hand for me to give to her? I can't find it when I look on the Triumph website. Thank you.

Would the part no. be in the owner's manual? I'd have to go home and check to see, but that might be a good place to start. Or if anyone has the tech. manual it could be in there. I e-mailed EurosportCycle for the part no., but no reply yet.

I'm sure the part number is in the owners manuel, but I'm stuck here at work and my manual is home also.

At least I got a reply from K & N and they're interested in looking into this for us.

Hi Triumph64,
The UNI filter #NU-3008 is what we need. That part number reference (from a competitor) will get their attention. K&N replacements will be available in a week.
Thanks,
Dennis

I remember reading that same article a few years back, picked it up off another bike site during one of those drawn out "my oil filter, air filter, tires are better than yours" threads.

There has been alot of independent testing of various filters out there (don't just rely on the manufacturer!!!).
Do a net search for 'air filter tests'. Most of the testing has been done by car guys with too much time on their hands, but from my reading the K&Ns were not all that impressive.

But I sent an email anyway - variety and choice is good for all of us.

A mate of mine does drag raceing and has been involved in alot of performance testing, he recomended that i stick with the stock paper filter just open the air box up as much as possible without interfearing in the filtration, I trust his judgment but have considerd the K&N filters, I'm still running stock at the mo.

(FYI, I sent the following today. Good idea Alkimmel)
--------------------------------------------------------

To whom it may concern

Please take the time to look at the following web site

www.bonnevilleamerica.com

This is a web site set up for owners of the above mentioned motorcycles. If you have a good look you'll notice how members are from countries such as Sweden, England, America, and Australia (me!), to mention a few. We all want the same thing.......

Stock replacement K&N air filters to fit these bikes. This is a market you really should tap into!

I received a response from Leon Collins. He says to use the TB9004 filter. I went to their site and that filter fits the Thruxton, Bonneville and T100. Not sure if it will work with our bikes.

Hi all - see post re DNA air filter - this is a "drop in" can be obtained from Norman Hyde in UK for about $65 US. It looks the same as a K&N.
