Yes last year he replaced the clutch plates and it ran fine. When he went to use it this spring he went about a mile and then the clutch stopped working. He has looked it all over and can't seem to find anything wrong.

If it grinds when he tries to shift it's not disengaging. Check the rod that runs through the tranny. They were notorius for developing a flex. I believe that there is also a small ball bearing on the clutch side that has been known to "warp" into some unknown dimension. Cable stretch was also a common problem easily checked.

Hi!
I did 34 years in the Navy of which about 20 was serving with (not in) the Marine Corps so have some experiences about service person owned personal property.
a. The buyer should check and view the title to see what name is on it.
b. If the name is the service person and they are not there to sign the bill-of-sale and sign over the title, then the person offering it for sale must have a valid, unexpired power-of-attorney which specifically states the named individual may buy/sell in the name of the service person.
If not, then the person selling it might not actually have permission from the service person to sell it. In which case when the service person gets home, if he/she wants to get fussy they could use the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act (as amended) to try to get the bike back.
Whomever tries to buy this bike needs to proceed real carefully.

I'll let him know about the rod and the bearing, not sure if he check these or not. Thanks! Scott

Was this reply meant to go somewhere else?

This is a real stretch (in memory and time), but I once ground the teeth off the first gear on a 76 Bonneville. It acted like a false nuetral as there was nothing for the clutch to engage to. If memory is sound it engaged & ran, then got to the point of no return and simply stopped. I still have the bit, the teeth are completely gone, rounded off to the same diameter as the steel tube gear mount?? The other gears (2 and up) and clutch was fine.

Ya, I thought of that as I went through the same thing SEVERAL times in years gone by! Hope it's the simple stuff though. I think we need more info as to what it is actually doing. (I was gonna use symptoms but I can spell that!)

You guys know Keith, that should speak for itself. As for someone close to Utica, I don't know anyone over thataway, maybe check with Destiny Motorsports in Sryacuse? They would be able to recommend someone in the area that knows the old ones. There is also a large group over that ways with the old bonnies/bsa/nortons but I don't know how to get a hold of them. I think they are affiliated with Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club TOMC
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Back again, I talked to Ed over the weekend and he said everything looks good but, it acts the way when you have the clutch lever squeezed, you can't even start the bike. The cluch plates wont compress together. I know this is hard to explain, but thanks for the help. Scott

The primary cover will need to come off first. If he's lucky it will be there and not internal. Primary chain ok and adjusted right? Gears ok? Clutch drums would wear grooves that WILL cause plates to hang. Been there done that! In fact I just trashed 3 drums. The grooves are inside the drum so it would need to come apart. See the pic.
90% of the time this type problem will be in the primary area.

I don't know anything about a '73, but you can't start my '66 with the clutch lever engaged. Must be in neutral with the lever out. A lot of guys engage the clutch, kick a few times to unstick the clutch plates as part of the starting ritual. Than, neutral and kick the bike over.

Thanks again, will pass the information on to Ed. If this doesn't do it he'll have to take it somewhere and get it looked at. If he does get it fixed I'll post what the problem was.
