Hey guys, thought I would share a little something I've been working on for my future father in law. He had a stroke in March and part of his therapy is practicing walking with a railing. He only needs one, cause he can't support any weight with his right hand... They (Kim's parents) are moving to an apartment off the side of her grandma's house next month which has been totally renovated to accomodate them, including a ramp off the house. They asked if I could figure out a way to have a railing in the back yard so he can practice walking outside. Well 6 coats of marine varnish later, it's all done! An oak railing supported with black iron pipe fittings. ROCK solid. Came out real nice I think! Can't wait for them to see it! Anyway, I had to share since it has been consuming my garage for a month!! Here are the pics. I can't get them to work on here

Very nice job! I'm sure he'll put it to good use. I'm curious, can't really see how the pipes are attached to the rail itself, are they countersunk or attached to the surface?

Hi, Benny,
Having had a handicapped wife, may I offer a suggestion for you to consider?
Lay down a path of gravel, about 3~4" deep by 24~30" wide, well packed down, along that path by the rail, and leading to it. Your father-in-law does not need slippery ground under his feet and I see leaves which hold moisture. And how muddy does that area get after a rain, etc., etc.
Nice job!

Thanks guys! The railing came with a flat side on the bottom, and a tiny groove milled into it for the centerl ine, VERY handy. So I clamped it to the 2X6 upside down and drilled holes with my press. (pic below) then I opened them up a wee bit with the dremel. I took pipe caps, drilled a hole in the middle, and epoxied and screwed the caps into the holes. Let em sit. Then screwed the whole pipe assembly to them. One of em came out crooked so that is what that wedge is for, rather than mess with re-drilling or whatever, just shimmed out the one support.

Stan, the plan right now is actually to make a patio out there with a picnic table. It would come right off the cement walk and come close to the railing so he can walk on a flat surface. They have a random stack of 1'X1' brick pavers, so that will be the start and we'll go from there. Kim's brother has some bricks leftover from his walk way too. The gravel is a good idea tho and might be a good temporary solution to get thru the winter!
