This is the first test of the side cover and fake air cleaner fit. Note that that IS a K&N Filter as used by the FREAK kits. I'd call this a SUPER Modified Air Box!!

OK, The left side was finished also. I'll tell you this for now. Right side, Remove seat, fake cover and one screw and you can change filter. Left side, remove seat, battery, fake cover stuff, two screws and you can change filter. While seat is off we will need to back off on filter pushy thingy, carb brace whatcha wanna callit. (Ain't got this done yet! )

Hahah actually I didn't, but I have gotten a lot of my stuff that way! Really I got it a couple years ago before I had a garage to work in, lots of tools, a bending brake, and confidence to tear into my bike. Otherwise I would have tried making my own Maybe I will make one out of AL or stainless sometime and then sell the pieces to some here... We'll see.

Actually, this is setup in an attempt to help our members that do not own the equipment nor want to spend the money to go to what I will refer to as the "Extreme". This is a low buck way, using what ya got that, I believe, will give you that same effect. Can it be better? Lets see! That's what this is all about. Take this idea and MAKE it better!!! Nobody else has posted this extreme a way to hack an airbox! NO WHERE ON THE WEB BUT HERE!!!! Super Modified Airbox for the America & SpeedMaster. Only on BA.com Watch and see!!!

I forget. But if you do a search going back around Febuary or March, I believe, it should be posted on this site. Some Truck place.
The side to side switch is just for what I'm doing now.

Interesting. So you need: Carb brace 2 K&N filters Anything else?
How did you make the cuts and what did you use? On the bike or did you pull the box and cut off the bike. This certainly looks do-able, thanks for posting.

Pulled the box out then cut with a Dremel. I got another box that I'll mark with a white grease pencil and take more shots of.
Being this first one was the prototype, I made several cuts so I could check clearence and fit. So it's actually cut in places it really doesn't need to be.

Thanks for the pics. My question is why would you cut up the airbox and not just remove it?

It's a cheap way to keep your side cover mounts and fake air cleaners. I have all the equipment to make metal supports but just wanted to experiment abit hoping it may help someone. I'll be posting more pics soon of this airbox mod plus pics of the metal replacements also. And I'm working on a totaly different airbox mod also. But I need to get some modeling clay 1st.

Got it. Ive had the covers off enough and never actually realized it was part of the airbox. Now it all make sence.

hey Jeff,
were you planning on posting kind of a detailed how-to on this procedure? i'm pretty sure i could figure it out given the idea (thanks!) but would benefit from any insight you might have to shortcuts, gotcha's, etc. i'd be really interested to see more pics sans the pseudo air cleaners to see exactly how you made the cuts.
also, am i understanding correctly that the point to this mod is to save money by using the structure of the airbox to provide support to the carbs and still have something to connect the cheese grates to - eg to not have to pay for the bracket that's included in the Freak kit?

Working on new pics with the cut box next to a stock box. The stock box will be marked with white grease paint as to where it should be cut to keep strength. The cut box is butchered pretty good as I wanted clearence so I could look inside for fit. Plus pointers as to why and how and thoughts on several areas to think about.

Oh, Gents (and Ladies, if you're out there)...
Can someone in the know give me a 1-10 comparison between the stock air filter, the drop-in K&N, and the K&N Pods? I'm really straddling the fence here about what to do -- I know I need to replace the stock filter, but I"m not sure whether to get the $55 drop-in unit, or wait a few more months, save my pennies, and hope I can afford the full Freak... or d'ya think this chop-mod will allow me to use the $75 pods without the rest of the freak?
Help? Opinions?

More photos uploadedThese new pics are side by side cut box and stock box. 1st, DO NOT cut the box top like I did. The stock box is marked as to how it should be done. This will keep the strength and shape. 2nd, DO NOT cut the right side open like I did. Again, we want to keep the shape and strength. I think that the top opened and all the front cut away will give LOTS of air. Plus you now have a handy box under the seat that stuff won't fall out of! A few more things COULD be done, I think a wise idea would be a small piece of sheet metal attached at the front for the 2 small tabs that hold the cheese graters. Those would be the weak spots as we're lookin at plastic here. At least some kind of safety wire attached to the cheese graters so they don't blow down the road should the tabs break.

Hrm. That doesn't look too awful. Couple of (stupid) questions:
1) Did you need to remove the airbox altogether to make all the cuts, or can you do it with the airbox still in the bike?
2) Did you need to re-route the crank case breather tube?
3) Did you need to use a brace for the carbs when you were done?
Thanks!

1. Yes. I removed the box. I doubt you could make all the cuts still in the frame. 2. You could put a breather on the hose where it ends or put a longer hose on and hide the breather. 3. You could make or buy a brace that bolts to the upper engine mount then to the cross tube or add a brace inside the box that pushes against the filters holding them on and acting as a brace. Your Welcome!

Cool! Do you recommend getting another airbox to cut and one to keep stock? I'm a little worried about plastic fatigue over the years.

The only place I'm looking closely at is the front parts holding the cheese graters.
I'm sure this area could be replaced with a metal bracket pretty easily.

If you are clean with the cuts, and make nice rounded corners, you will probably be ok as far as the cheese graters go. But if a crack starts....

Here was my solution to the carb brace. Available at local hardware store for $2.40 plus tax. J-Bolt w/nut 3/16 x 1.88 $0.60 Turnbuckle EHK 3/16 x 4 $1.80 The EHK turnbuckle means it has a hook on one end and an eye on the other. Remove the eye end and replace it with the J-hook. Use the nut supplied as a jamb nut. Use the hook end around the carb cross tube and the J hook through the engine mount hole. Requires no tools, finger tighten. Paint to match.
