I have a friend that went to ride the Tail of the Dragon in TN last month. He is an experienced rider and rides a Harley Road King. He said that on numerous occasions, sport bikes would fly by crossing the yellow line passing him in both directions at unbelievable speeds. There are 318 curves in the 11 mile section of road. When riding you definitely need to pay attention to the road ahead and stay in your lane. Many people find all the curves quite scary. He said it was the sport bike riders that scared the hell out of him.

The accident figures will always go up as more riders head to the area.
Over here, the anti-bike people made great noises about the increase in the number of bike accidents year on year. Yeah, well that's 'cause there are more riders, year on year.
It will get to be like the popular bike roads over here where, at certain times of year, there is a constant police presence using pursuit cars / bikes and helicopters spoiling it for the decent riders out there.
I feel sorry for the local people who have to put up with the cretins that rip past their homes and businesses every day.

I think we should ban these biker scum! Oh, wait...except us Triumph owners, of course.
I'm sure some of those cagers aren't exactly driving the speed limit either...but triple digit speeds is plain crazy!

My guess is that the whole thing will come to an end sooner than later. Cameras and technology being what they are, all it would take is a check point like the ones used for drunk driver. They will probably start stopping riders, and loading their bikes on a flat bed trailer. When you get out of jail, and pay the huge fine you get your bike back. The same thing happened with dirt bikes... there used to be places all over this area to ride until people started abusing the privilege. Now 90% of the best places are closed. It's really sad.

Guess that's proof positive that a high speed encounter between a bike and a guard rail or truck is not going to end well for the rider! There are tracks out there where the sport bikes can get their fill of riding at high speed without endangering others. The problem is the adrenaline junkies who don't get enough thrill just riding the curves at normal speed. They need to jump it up to levels where they have to cross the yellow lines to make the angles. I wouldn't want to be responsible for the damage they cause. I love riding, but I want to make it home in one piece too. For that matter, as much as I love bike shows on Speed Channel, Superbikes isn't doing the sportbike craze any favors when they encourage wild riding on public streets (which happens on alot of their episodes).

[page 980 of the Oxford American Dictionary] squid /skwid/ n./1-any of various ten-armed cephalopods, esp. of the genus Loligo. 2-any of various two-armed Homo sapiens who ride motorcycles over 8/10th of their abilities and/or faster than road conditions would dictate, esp. of the genus Sportbikeus-stupidus. ________________ Now...having read that , I have to admit that I've grown a few tentacles in the past myself now and then, which is one of the reasons I bought the BA. It was time to slow down a bit. And, I also have to admit that "a bit" is all I've slowed down, but I never ever go over that 8/10th anymore, 'cuz as some o' you guys know...crashin' "ain't no fun". Dwight(semi-stupidus cruiserus) (hmmm...gee, I don't know why, but I think I'll tune into the Cartoon Network and see if they're showin' any Coyote and Road Runner cartoons right now)

In my youth I was quite the idiot rider. Then I grew up. Still like to ride fast but not stupid. Thankfully I made it through those days with limited injuries. Worst crash was through a large pile of garbage and into someones garage, while the homeowner was cleaning it.
One of the reasons for my change was meeting an older very experienced rider. I learned alot from him and rode often with him, mostly dirt.
I think instead of bashing them maybe educating them would help. I have a kid on my block that recently started riding and we have already had a few chats about safety. He is of course, like most his age riding a sport. He seems to appreciate ours talks but maybe he is giving me the finger when I walk away.

Guilty...
Sad to say it but I've done much of this stuff in my past life (not too far past either). It is worse, obviously with more riders but it sure is fun! Of course I haven't done any 130+ on my TBA... (not even 100+).
The best thing is to "take it to the track" but that requires scheduling, money, and several trips to earn the right to "hang it out" with the big boys. Not too many weekend "bandits" are going to settle for the 2-3 times a year 'track days'.
What can you say when the manufacturers produce 'Liter' bikes which can do stuff that are just-inside the limits of the laws of physics - but way outside the laws-of-land and go beyond any interpretation of applications of "common sense"?
Which of us hasn't used the phrase..."ride it like you stole it"?

Well problem is like most youngsters they aint gonna listen to too much of what an old fart has to say. Oh they'll listen "Say yep you are right I should be a little more careful". Than the next day hes riding a Wheelie a at 100 with sombodys daughter on the back.
