I don't even remember what the title was, but I guess it could be a little racy without too much of an effort! lol

Yikes! All that snow looks scary. I'm not ready for that yet. I'm still hoping to get a few more rides in!

Those Mechanic bags are sweet, Matt.
My Touring bags are the same, only a full 13" deep instead of the 12.5" Mechanics.
I had some plexi-glass handy when I received the bags and brackets, but it split out as I tried to drill it, so I tossed it. The bags have held up real well, to a lot of abuse and overloading, too, I might add. Mine were a Christmas addition last year, but have a good 13k on them already, give or take. (I do take them off when I want to ride "naked".) Those EZ-Brackets are nice.
You got a great deal!

I have the Deluxe Fleetside Slants. A piece of heavy flexible plastic would likely work better than plexiglass, more forgiving. They do get streesed when they are over stuffed, easy to do, but structurally, they handle it real well. I love mine.
Neighbor gave them to me. He had placed the plastic sheet on the mounting side of the bag and that was two years ago. Plastic just helps and is a good move. I have Easy Brackets and they are really the best.

Cannot drill plexiglass with anything larger than say 1/8 bit. Use a rotorzip (or dremel), plunge cut then work the hole bigger with concentric passes of the rotorzip bit.

Hum. Where does one secure heavy plastic? I can think of those 50gal blue drums but those are not flat.

I cracked my first one - but I was trying to drill it while it was in the bag. I then drilled the bag first, inserted the plexiglass and marked it, removed and drilled it flat on a piece of wood. That worked great. I used a large bit - 3/8 - with no issues.
As for our snow - that's the 18" or so we got on Thursday here in Colorado. But this being the Denver area, it's half gone already, and I would guess a lot more will be gone by the end of day today. I'm sure I could ride tomorrow to work if I wanted to... my only concern is the snow run-off freezing on the streets overnight. It's suppose to be in the 60s today, so riding this afternoon wouldn't be a problem. Last year, I hand-washed and waxed my car on Christmas day. I would say you can easily ride 50% of the time in the winter months as long as you're not going into the mountains.

I used a thin sheet of aluminum for backing on my Willie&Max slants, and riveted them to the insides of the bag. Then I drilled a couple of holes above and below the Honda Magna brackets so I can ziptie the bags to the guards. Makes for a nice secure fit.

Moe I'm sorry to contradict you, but you can drill plexiglass with a drill bit. You were right when you said start with a 1/8th bit(and use a roto zip) but you can gradually make a larger hole by increasing your drill bit size in steps....Angelis

Plexiglass is more brittle than Lexan, but Lexan scratches easier. For use as a back up plate on saddle bags, you would want to go with Lexan.

Check the rear photo and the last photo.
I had some Willy&Max bags like this on my '95 Honda that I traded in for my TBA.
The problem with this design is those straight-across-the-top flaps. As you ride in rain or through puddles they let the water in.
So when I buy some bags for my TBA I'm gonna make sure they have tops that come down over the edge so as to help prevent some of the rain from getting inside.
Nice photos!

that's a pretty good point and one I hadn't thought of. I wonder if the inner flaps that cover the top could be used on the outside of the top flap in a pinch? That would help to keep out most of the water, but they may not hold up at speed...

Willie & Max have a new line out called the Condor series. No straps or fringe. I am going to check them out and try and get a set of Easy Brackets to go with them. I've been looking for the right bags for 4 1/2 years

Most bags will not keep out a good rain. If I anticipate it, I pull everything, line the saddlebag with a kitchen trash liner and tuck the excess top of the liner out of the way. Every road trip is pre-planned like this.
I also carry plastic bags of varying sizes, just in case. A few bags folded into a ziplock is a very small package.
