I think i may be on to something with that rich running problem being linked to the EVLS system. I went home for lunch today and picked up the bike to go back to work and while i was pushing it out of the car port i had a thought about something i read in Gary D's EVLS removal instructions over at RAT. He said when he first tried it he made one mistake......he plugged off the line from the float bowl vent that runs to a valve that opens when you start the bikeHis float bowls over-flowed fuel all over the place. That made me wonder if maybe the valve was not opening enough. So i took the line off it and added a piece of fuel line that just hangs down below the bike as he said he did after he realized it shouldn't be plugged. I started the bike with the choke all the way out and it did something it never did before...it idled as high as usual, but it was completly stable. It usually surges back and fourth about 1000 RPM's from lowest to highest. When i took off the bike felt stronger than it's been lately, and the vibration i've been battling was reduced to the point where i can imagine it may have been there all along but i never noticed it. I can't say with 100% certainty whether that was either problem, and time will tell. But it sure feels different. Anyone ever heard of this malady?

I wonder if I have this issue. I'm getting a slight surge at start-up but it goes away after the bike is warmed up. It doesn't seem to causing any other problem.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's something that is problematic with many of the bikes with EVLS and that maybe it happens to varying degrees that may or may not cause obvious problems. If fuel runs down the line at any time and drys up in there it may gum the valve up enough to cause it to not fully open. One more reason to just remove this junk i guess. Tho while not likely in CA that you'd ever be found out, if you did i'm positive the fine would be huge.

I don't know how the valve is controlled, but if it's vacuum controlled then capping off the right manifold when we balance the carbs might cause the valve to stay close with the engine running and send fuel down the line. If i'm right about that then this is a new issue that should be known and even vaulted. Could be the yet to be found cause of many fuel problems. Anyone know if the valve is vaccum activated or electrical?

Carburetor vent valves are electrically operated.
Since my '03 doesn't have these I have to assume they are there for the Cal. models

My take.....get all that junk off the bike. You will thank yourself afterwards.

My poor speedie was a Kalifornia model and it thanked me profusely once I took all that poopo off of it.

I'd really like to. But i can assure you that if the law somehow finds me w/o it the fine will be huge. This is the kind of thing they don't take lightly. However all i have to do is plug off the nipples and do the same thing with the tank breather i did with the float breather and leave the parts on the bike, just unhooked. (maybe leave the hoses on the carbs and manifold but render them as capped by putting rubber plugs in the hoses so it appears hooked up) I may do that, but they way it runs now i don't think it matters. I've plugged the entire thing off a few times but it didn't run any differnt till i unplugged the float breather. Thats apparently the one thing that effects the running. I guess this fuel thing was affecting the running a lot more than i thought because today was the first time in the last 6 weeks or so i really enjoyed riding again. Must have happened gradually so i didn't notice it. Tho i did feel lately like the bike wasn't running as strong as it once did, but i figured it was in my mind.

Finally!
Maybe Elvis' elves had a hand in that. Glad to read you had a good ride. Hopefully many more "trouble free" rides will follow.

daz, I was reading an article about our carbs "understanding Keihin's cvk" and it said "differing float levels cause and imbalance which may be perceived as vibration"

if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

Yes, i've read that too in the jenks carb tuning guide. The floats themselves are adjusted perfectly from 2 different tests i've done. But who knows.....maybe now that i *think* i have the rich condition sorted (fingers crossed) i'll find that with all the tweking and experimenting i've done in trying to find the problem, something i messed with needs to be readjusted. Maybe now that the valve is out of the loop i'll find the pilot screws are way off from each other or some such thing that never mattered till now. Come to think of it i've posted before about not being able to use the trick of removing one plug wire and adjusting the screw for best idle then doing the other side because the idle never changed when i tried that. maybe now it'll work and i'll find one side way different from the other and that'll sort the vibes completely. That would make me breathe a sigh of relief that would be heard round the world. Anyways, it's hard not to get my hopes up after todays find, but it's hard not to. Can't wait to hit the hills saturday on a bike thats running like it should. After that i'll check the plugs and post back, unless it's bad news in which case i guess i'll go back into my shell and begin sulking again.

Do you mean EVAP system? If so..I have 17 large garden trash bags full of 17 EVAP systems from 17 BAs and BSs.
Took all that stuff off when installing the FREAKS or BCs version. It adds up to about 5lbs of plastic, rubber hoses, vapor canisters and valves. All 17 owners rode away with a big grin on their face.
