Has anybody added foot pegs to what would be the standard location? I find myself wanting to put my feet down there for a change of pace on a long ride. It would also be good so a person could stand a little to dirt bike a big bump or railroad tracks. Just curious.

Hi Bob, the answer to your question is "yes". Chris Nix (boogieman) is coming out with touring pegs for our bikes. Look in the "VENDORS" forum under the heading "new stuff" I have been waiting for someone to do this for a long time.
if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

Bob...an alternate is to move the buddy pegs to the lower bolt setting on the peg hangers....it is a sporty position but when I go on 500+ mile road trips the position is very comfortable and worked well this last week when I had to travel the roads in Kentucky (Rough Roads).... and really, my wife likes the position for her better as passenger and it got rid of those (my opinion) ugly peg hangers.........................

If boogieman or Brent or someone with skills doesn't come out with a product soon I will have a VERY nice 05 BA for sale.
My butt cannot take the riding position on our bikes for more than 45 minutes. Yeah, I am old.

CAUTION: If seeing pictures of otherwise once perfectly good motorcycles maimed and otherwise disfigured by sharp metal implelents and other assorted pointy stuff offends the viewer, then step away from the mouse.
My motorcycle is kind of like a two wheeled Farmall or 40's Powerwagon to me. If I want to grab a saw and lop something off, or bolt something on, I do. You've been warned.

3/16 x 1" It's what I had on hand when the inspiration came upon me. If I were to go buy stock, 1/4 or better yet 5/16 would probably be a better choice.
Can I stand on them? Maybe. Maybe not. Each would have to support 120 lbs. If they flex out, I'll go up a notch or two on the stock. There's plenty of thread on the OEM pillion peg mounting bracket bolts to go with a thicker stock. They only take about an hour to make, less paint cycles. These are kind of like prototypes. I need a few hundred miles to see if this position will work. They may end up being right in the way. Time will tell.
The pillion peg mounting bracket serves as a builder's template. I drilled the upper bracket holes, then aligned the stock to the pillion peg mount bracket with the bolts, and placed a one inch rule across the bottom of the peg mounting bracket, and drew my cut off line at the bottom of the rule. The left over stock's angle of cut is a perfect complementary angle when flipped over for making the weld joint for the horizontal part of the bracket. Easy cheesy.
New link to peg photos. Yahoo changed it up in the past few hours.

FWIW, I used Hammerite hammer finish paint. The textured finish eliminates some of the frustrations of spraying with rattle cans.

With my thanks to Chy for the idea

Oooo I love aluminum. What kinda stock aluminum would you think it would take to support 250? Also, you could prevent some outward deflection by making it out of angle iron or something.

I have some 1/4 x 1" aluminum antenna brackets in the drawer here that look pretty stout. I don't know much about how to bend aluminum without it going south though.

Yeah me neither. I have bent some up, but if the bend gets tight then you can see the "long side" of the bend starting to stretch.

It occurs to me now that the length of the horizontal piece is acting as a lever against the weld. If I try to do much standing on these, my glomoxness + x" of lever may = road debris.
For the function of standing, wider stock & maybe two bolts drilled throught the joint area for redundancy might be a good idea. I think they'll be fine as is strictly as foot rests though.

This one is working with Firefox 1.07 without a log in
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/crockoshat/album/576460762322517281#page1
but I think Yahoo has some scripting or coding and ad content galore going on that may prohibit some browsers from access. I don't know how that all works though.
The other issue may be that when I first pushed the photos up, I was seeing the old Yahoo photo space. When I looked at the site a few hours later, everything had changed. I believe they are making some major changes there.

Test drive one - I went to visit a remote logging job, and had to walk the bike in reverse down a hill a 100 feet or so. With the pegs folded up, they brush lightly against my legs. If or when I make another set, putting them a little more inboard with a longer peg would probably be good.
Leaving the pegs down and walking backwards probably wouldn't have been good, but that was fairly apparent without trying.

Test drive two - the 3/16 stock is most definately too light for my substantial (ahem) 'load.' The pegs started to move a little during a stand up test. I found that they will need to be stronger so I can move myself around on the seat by putting weight on them. The peg position is pretty good though, and acts kind of like an upright cafe postion, if you will. I'm going to try some heavier stock next. Maybe even up to 3/8 with some longer bolts.

boy, that's a lot of leverage. i bet even 1/2 inch stock would flex. if you look at the rear hangers, they're 3/4 in hollow section and not nearly the stress.
the placement looks reat though.

As for the leverage thing... Maybe some gussets? Triangular connectors? Or tying them into the empty holes in the frame where the center stand should be?

I had a hankerin' to use the center stand mounts, as they look like they would support a Mack truck, (or even one fat rider)
What kind of design do you think would work for a bracket that won't move around on the one hole? I was thinking maybe a T section to ride on the frame, then bolt thorough the hole, but I couldn't come up with any ideas that were clean and simple, and within my fabrication limits. Any ideas?

Well "within your fabrication limits" is the tough thing for me to know, but... I was thinking if you had one piece go forward from the bottom peg bracket hole, and one piece up/out from the center stand hole, bolted together, you essentially get a triangle. Or even just reinforce your current design with a link up from the center stand local. Comprende?

That's a great idea, and easy enough to do.
I got stuck on thinking stand-alone bracket up from the center stand hole.

Two words: Corbin and footboards.... allow you to move closer to the controls and 'stand' on the back of the foot boards. The Corbin made the big difference of not sitting on your sacrum with a rounded spine..... I too could ride for only about 45 - 60 mins without stopping on the stock saddle..... Now, Much better.

Here is a picture of some mid pegs I made. Located right in front of rear sprocket cover (Hard to see because they are black). Made out of 1" square tubing. Mount to holes in frame for rear passenger footpeg bracket. Don't flex at all.

O.K. heres two more pictures (sorry for the poor quality of the pictures). Right Side Left side Left side bracket made out of 3/4" square tubing since its shorter. I didn't modify the passenger footpeg brackets, I just used longer mounting bolts and mounted them right over the mid peg brackets. At this point, a sharp eyed reader might realise that the two pegs are NOT directly across from each other on the bike. The right peg is further forward than the left one. I did this so that the pegs would tuck neatly out of the way in the recesses of the engine. It doesn't bother me that my feet are a little staggered when I rest them on the pegs. Others might find it wierd. Vance

Well done! Looks very integral, and not scabbed on. I so want a pair. Like you, I would probably live with the stagger for the clean look, and After all the idea is to rest your body on a long ride with an alternate place to put your feet. I can see myself now, running back and forth from the shop to the PC when I fab them up this winter. Thanks!

But now I see how they tuck away.
