You can do a plug check anytime you want.
Put new ones in first, then take a plug wrench and hit the road. Wind the bike up to 3/4-WOT in 3rd or 4th gear and at the same time - hit the kill switch and pull in the clutch. Coast to a stop, pull plugs and check them Ouch, it's hot in there, be careful. Also be sure to find a safe stretch of raod to do this on, flat is best. That is called doing a "Plug chop" and is the best way to do a plug check without any special tools.
Edit: Let me add that instead of changing your jets, put some TBS needles in and see what that does. It will richen you up in the 1/2 to WOT as well as get rid of any mid throttle laziness.
