Recently while checking the clamps for tightness i found they fely very loose. So much so that you could practically turn them by blowing on the screwdriver. So i tightened them but they hit the end of thier travel before the screwdriver ever felt like they had tightened up even a bit. Is this normal and they way they are ? If you can't feel them tighten i'm wondering how you know when they are tightened correctly, or are you supposed to tighten them to the end of thier travel? Thats where i have them not, but i'm wondering if thats too tight and will stress and split them at a very inopportune moment.

Tightening them to the end of the travel on the clamps could crack them. Tighten them until they do not move. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean, dry, and have no oil or gas on them.
That said, I have never seen one of these bikes reach the end of the clamp travel.

I know of one case:
Fran replaced his clamps on his '01 Bonne due to the stock clamps bottoming out.

Mine bottomed out from the gitgo. I replaced them with new SS band clamps that get nice and snug now. Jaymos also bottom out.

Ok, so i guess it's normal then. I suppose as long as they don't leak i'm ok, and trying the WD40 test they seem to be good. Other than that i was worried about what Phil said. But i figure if you (Pat) got new ones to go tighter than the stock ones i'm probably fine.

I wouldn't recommend letting anyone see that.

I had one rubber on backwards and fouled a plug due to the air leak. I imagine loose clamps could yield the same result.

Something else to consider: The rubbers will expand as things heat up... ...thus sealing them a bit more.
