125+mph on a stock clock, with a 17 tooth puller - And still climbing (i got scared) - but that was on a RED America - so you probably won't consider it.

Had 120+ quite a few times, 130's, 42, top snorkel out, K&N filter, 18 tooth, unbranded pipes, lowered, and it's a 01 reg/02 Red America.

"On the clock" ain't the same as real - My SM speedo was about 10% out (measured with a GPS unit). Try doing a timed run to see what you're really getting.

I would suggest being careful with the speedo. When will it stop spinning up and break? Bet its not a cheap unit even though they don't work well. Most are 5-10% high over 50mph

my speedo (not stock) is dead on as measured by mile markers. 112 mph on the DC beltway going down hill and could have done more if not for the saddlebags and traffic. i'm an aerodynamic and streamlined 6'3", 275 lbs on an '02 tba, opened air box, 132 mains, 1 shim, gutted tor pipes.

I still have yet to get anywhere near the 100 mark. I find for whatever reason I get visions of a mish mash of teeth, hair, blood and brains et al at around 95 miles an hour indicated.
I think it has to do with getting old.
Speed scares old people. Or so I am told.

we're doubly blessed in the metric countries. What with a 10% error and speedo reading in km/h, I can pull 150 no problem on my stocker.
I'll tell you something though, as a kid on a 650 BSA street scrambler I always considered 70mph the dividing line between riding fast and "oops, this scenery is moving past me very quickly". Bikes, traffic, and roads have changed quite a bit in nearly 40 yrs and an indicated 140 kph (80'ish mph) is where I haul myself down now even if there's no risk of police intervention.

Would that have been a 650 BSA Firebird Scrambler (red)? I had one about 1970. Lots of fun!!

Yes, yes, lordy yes. It was a firebird - the finest pece of iron ever to come out of england. $995 out the showroom door. Insurance was like $50 and gas was like 35 cents a GALLON. Loved that bike to bits for the summer of 69 til it got stolen in the fall.

On my way home from the NERally at Pat's, a NY State Trooper pulled me over to let me know I just blew by him at 87mph. This confirms my thoughts that the speedo reads about 10% high, I was showing an indicated 95.
This could prove to be an expensive way to check speedo accuracy, Uncle Charlie

Bill, Looks exactly like mine was, only mine was red. Yours looks great. I took mine with me cross-country to join the US Air Force. Then I rode on the road and in the dirt for years. Kept up with the new fangled "motocross" bikes in the dirt, even the jumps, and was at home on the highways too. About half the roads were not paved back then, but it didn't matter to the Firebird-all was fair game, even riding up and down staircases, docks, peers, beaches, and anything else that got in the way.

You REALLY need to be careful who you listen to. Why did Cardinal Red vanish from the America line when the R3 came out??? Because Triumph reserves the brightest red for their fastest bikes!

Hmmph. All the comments about Billy Lane's criminal idiocy, and we have a thread about excessive and criminal speed on the open road. Nice.

I think there's just a tiny bit of difference between cracking the throttle on an open stretch of road and driving double over the drunk limit and killing someone on a two lane road.

To be honest.....There's a lot of difference. Being in control of a vehicle, and see how fast it will go, I've done that. I chickened out admittedly. 104 in an open face with no screen is fast enough for me thank you very much. That was on a very empty motorway. Apparently there was an important football game on at the time (soccer)but had no interest to me...
Some pillock that has drunk far to much is not in control. Of anything. I believe that one pint is too much. I'll go to the pub and drink lemonade....
on the other hand
I know I'm probaly preaching to the converted, but control is all well and good, but we are all subject to other pillocks in the road... I would say ask me how I know... just read the coffee thread. I'm still hurting nearly 2 weeks later.
Ever get the feeling I'm seeing both sides of an arguement again...?
I'm off back to sleep....

I have one question from an ol' man with more than one trip to the hospital because of stupid stuff done and stupid stuff done too, why the fasination with speed? Sorta like the post I saw yesterday about an idiot riding two up going so fast that his passanger could not hold on and ended up with severe road rash and a few life altering situations. At least, I hope you were on a track and not on the public road, everyone knows that bikers are crazy and race around with no regard for the laws, at least that what a lot of the "cagers" think.

got clocked at 115 in a 55 while parked on the side of the road at a Snow Cone Hut a couple of weeks ago. The OKHP said "at that speed on the side of the road, I'd be dangerous with the bike running" he then mentioned something about needing a radar callibration check ! Proof positive- TBA's are fast, even setting still.......
