It just hit me that i don't recall any wheel balancing weights on the rear since new. It's 10pm and my bike is in the dark right now down in the apt. garage, so i'll have to check tomorrow. But i've cleaned it a million times and i don't recall any weights. Is this normal? Does anyone have weights on thier speedy rear wheel? Since i got the new tires there aren't any either, so i don't know whether they just didn't balance it because the rear isn't necassary, or maybe it was spot on at the factory and the guys who mounted it didn't balance it or what. (they added new weights to the front wheel tho)Any thoughts? I'm wondering if i should take it in and have it balanced.

Mine are weighted right at the air valve.

Mine did'nt have any weight on the rear from the factory either. When I replaced the rear it took a small amount. If they take the time to rebreak the bead and spin it on the rim I think most metzler's can be mounted without weight.

But Metz's have a red dot thats supposed to be lined up next to the valve. I don't know the reason for that but i would imagine It's the lightest part of the tire so they want you to mount it next to the stem which would be the heaviest part of the wheel. If thats the case spinning it probably wouldn't help. Does anyone know anything about that dot? I'm looking at an out of balance rear as the cause of my vibe problem. Probably unlikely, but just one of dozens of things i need to eliminate to try and narrow it down.

Here's what I've been told (anyone, feel free to add opinions)-

Provided there are no other interferring factors, the tire is marked to enable placement in a way that will place the tire on the rim in a 'balanced' position. It does NOT always work, but I have never had a case where it did not. Somehow, the tire mfgr. can pre-determine (balance, if you will) the tire. If the wheel is balanced and the tire placed according to the mark, you are essentially 'balanced'

I read something interesting in the tuning notes over on the Jenks site. On page 4 of that PDF, he states Differing float levels cause an imbalance which may be perceived as vibration. Worth a check at least.

Thats pretty much what i thought. I guess they do this under the assumption that the wheel is perfect and that the valve is the off-setting factor to the wheel's balance and the tires may somehow be made so theres a slight weight difference to make up for the valve by making the dot area sightly ligther or the opposite side slightly heavier to balance out the valve stem. Because alloys, which being tubless this tire is obviously designed for, have metal stems which would throw the wheel out of balance all else being equal.

As to the jenks thing, i read that 3 times in the last day or so out of desperation ! I have already checked the floats a couple times 2 different ways, so i don't think thats it. But i AM leaning towards a engine harmonic scenario whether caused by fuel or something else. I've gotten so desperate i've posted at harley, honda, kawi and suzuki forums !

When I bought my tires, the mechanic said they didn't need to be balanced. The weights were to balance the wheel. Horrible vibration about 50mph. Bought my own balancer/truing stand and it took about 90 grams.
