The paint lining around the filler opening is bubbling and peeling. I know at least one other person on this board has had this problem. The bike is only 18 months old and I think this is a problem Triumph should take care of. Anyone here have experience with getting Triumph to fix this or replace the tank?

thanks,
Hugh

several people here, myself included have had this problem. I think I heard at least one person had their tank replaced under warranty. I plan to approach my dealer this winter with this problem, before my warrany runs out.

Once it's replaced get yourself one of those Kuryakyn fuel caps (think Brent stocks them). It has an inner sleeve that protects the lip of the tank from getting knocked/chipped by the gas pump when filling etc.

I'm surprised this is still going on. I have a 2003, they replaced my tank, but the replacement was just as bad within weeks. My dealer used a knife and cut the paint out from inside the neck on the replacement tank. this guy was pretty steady with the knife and no trouble since. If they offer to fix it, you may want to take them up on that offer, on the condition if they make it bad, then you get a replacement. Good luck,

I solved my problem on my 2004 with a Kuryakyn Gas cap.

This seems to be a dealer decision. If your local shop tells you that Triumph refuses to replace the tank, try another dealer.

As a last resort, drain the tank, take it off the bike, set it as upside down as you can manage and use steel wool to remove the paint. Wash out the tank to make sure no loose paint is in there. It's also a good idea to remove the petcock (careful with the gasket!) and make sure no paint bits are clinging to the strainer.

Just to clarify my bike is a 2004 which I bought new in March of 2005. I don't know if the newer bikes still have this problem. I'll contact the dealer on Tuesday to see what they can do about it.

Could someone tell me how long the standard warranty is on our bikes?

Thanks,
Hugh

mine's an 04. note though that when they replaced the tank (april 06) the new one had a much harder-looking surface inside the filler. I would guess the 06 models had the new tank coating.

Well I took my bike in to a Triumph dealer to get the tank replaced under warranty and they've stated that the tank is only warranteed for the first year. They then told me that Triumph would replace the tank but would not cover the labor under warranty. They want to charge me 2 hours labor for changing the tank and said that I could not do the labor myself. I said 2 hours seems and awful long time to swap a petcock and tank badges. They then told me that they would also have to replace the fuel pump.

Couple of questions.
Has anyone heard about Triumph only warrantying the tanks for 1 year?
Do our bikes really have a fule pump? I've taken the tank off a couple of times and I didn't see any indication that there was a pump in the tank of our bikes.

Thanks,
Hugh

They have to replace gravity?

Sounds fishy.

Sounds like somebody is jerking your chain.. our bikes don't have fuel pumps and why should the tank only be under warranty for one year when the rest of the bike is for two years.
And 2 hours labor for replacing a fuel tank is ridiculous ... time for a call to Peter Carleo.

You are being taken for a ride. Nowhere does it state the tank is only warranted for a year. It IS an integral part of the bike after all! 2 hours? I could have a tank (with all parts) swapped out in about 30 minutes and that's taking a two beer break.

There is no fuel pump. These bikes are gravity feed fuel delivery.

I would call Triumph and tell them what you told us. Sounds darn near unscrupulous.

What dealership is this?

Peter Carleo is a customer service rep at Triumph N.A. in Georgia. There's been some mixed experiences with him; when I dealt with him initially about my oil pump gears, he immediately tried laying the blame on me and the mods that the dealer had done, and on the rat.net, one member called to complain about the broken spokes deal, and got a less than customer-oriented response. He's worth a try though, I'm sure someone has his number.

Just for grins, why don't you ask for those details in a written estimate? Getting something in writing can never hurt. Especially when they try to explain to you where exactly the fuel pump is, or why the bike is covered for 2 years, unlimited miles... oh, except for the tank!?
I've heard better things about Winchester, that's too bad.

Yeah I had heard good things about Winchester also. I'm kind of surprised that they're pulling this stunt since I expressed interest in buying a bike from them.

Apparently Triumph customer support is out of the office for a few days.

thanks for the help,
Hugh

I bought my bike from Winchester and was very happy with the deal and the sales department. I would "buy" there again, but I do question their service department.

In Virginia we're required to get annual safety inspections for our POV's (to include motorcycles). The cost is $12 (assuming everything passes) for a motorcycle. I have never paid beyond the cost of the inspection on any of my vehicles. Winchester wanted to charge me 1/2 hour labor, the cost of the sticker (expected), and it would take them a week to so me.

Went to my local HD dealership, everyone complimented the bike, and I was out the door in 20 minutes for the cost of the sticker.
