We've got a chance to acquire an '88 Goldwing for next to nothing. Haven't seen it yet but supposed to be clean. Needs a head gasket. Anyone have any experience in this area?
I've seen some of these barges pared down to just the basics that looked pretty nice. It might be nice to buy/repair/resale for a few dollars proffit. Might be fun too.

To me the 80's goldwings were the best made. Today they are just big heavy piles of plastic on wheeles

A good friend of mine in the adjoining county rides an early 80's goldwing. He was travelling to Sturgis about 5 years ago on a old Yamaha 650 when the engine blew up about 15 miles from the rally. Some bike shop in Sturgis or Deadwood or one of those places, had the aforementioned well-used goldwing in a back corner. He sold the blown up Yamaha for parts, paid the difference on the goldwing and has been riding the tar out it ever since. From talking to him, it is real solid mechanically. If it wasn't for gasoline and potty breaks, I don't think he would ever stop. I remind him that his wife is a Saint.

A friend of mine has one he bought brand new in 88. They are very easy to work on and you can recoup your investment easily and make a tidy profit if it's clean.

Man, I was riding home yesterday and as I cruise past an entrance this humongous yellow beast lumbers onto the road. I gotta say, that's some marketing magic that can sell a real human being on that shade of yellow for a motorcycle! It's almost like the Honda marketing guys had a contest to see just how ugly a color people would buy! Wonder what the guy who said "I guarantee as good a bike as the Wing is, a Baby Sh!t Yellow Wing will sell!" got for winning? I got no beef with Big Red, they've always made bulletproof affordable, but golleejeeze... a baby sh!t yellow motorcycle!? My old dirt bikes were yellow, but they were that great world champion shade of Suzook motocross yellow, not that big yellow elephant shade they use for the new wings. Sorry, the thread title just made me think of that thing I saw yesterday.

Yes, but he will stand out to the cages, The Triumph dealer I bought my TBA off also have a Suzuki, Yamaha outlet and they tried selling my mrs and me a yellow one, said it would go well with our jackets, Black and yellow. I just said I don't think so. Would look like a bannana riding down the road.

Same marketing guy that has convinced Harley owners to pay $20k for a $12,000.00 motorcycle and $8000.00 worth of "life-style".

Don't know if I am remembering this right but I think 88 was the first year of the 1500 when they first covered up most of the engine. Bought a new one in 93. Had it for 6 years. Pulled a cargo trailer with it. Good bike. Too much plastic. Like other honda's & harley wanna be's out on the road you get no respect. Just got to be too big a bike for the type of riding I want to do now at 54. Bought a new 05 america. Looked for a good 100 mile bike & got rid of the 1000 mile bike. And the respect is there!!!!!

You mean, "low class ignorant life style".

i wd. think it's pretty easy putting a head gasket on a wing. there's going to be 2 since the jugs are opposed. the only thing i've heard about wings is to keep a good timing belt on them.

many wingers like the 1500 over the new 1800. i'd buy it in a heartbeat.
