Just had delivered my new bike, my first Triumph - a 06 red/black Speedmaster. As usual it is raining so I am in the garage looking over my new purchase. I have been looking for a new bike for months and this site was a great help in helping me choose. The British weather is up to its old tricks and it is pouring down I am left to sit in the garage with the new purchase and go thorough the manual. Can any one help - I can't find any helmet lock hook or device. No mention of it in the handbook. Is their one and if not any after sale one on the market? Have searched the old posts but can't find any mention either. I am sure that this will be the first of many questions until I get it run in.
Cheers - Redsnapper

There is no built in helmet lock.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I finally bought a helment lock from Brent that bolts onto the handle bars. It has a rubber weather cover for the lock.

Welcome Redsnapper, and congrats on your choice of bike. One (or two) of these handlebar locks is a good excuse to get rid of the crappy rubber handgrips and put something shinier on.
You can find them at Kuryakyn.

One problem with a helment lock, is it usually holds the helment upside down, to collect rain. If you have the Triumph backrest and luggage rack, a helment over the top of the backrest just locks with a normal padlock, and the helment does not collect any water. Welcome aboard!

Very true. With that kuryakyn one you've cout enough length in your helpmet straps to hang the helmet on the handlebar to stop that happening... well at on the right hand side you do. Put your pillion's helmet on the left.

Hi Redsnapper It would be great if it did have a helmet lock somewhere built on to the frame but the cost must have outweighed the practicality of it. But at least you got Speedmaster now that comes with the toolkit,,,, not like the America.

Even my Korean Honda-copy has a better tool kit than that...though that has nowhere to store it. I'm not eve nsure where it is, except it's not on the bike.

Others may have varying opinions concerning helmet locks - But here's mine;
I find the need a bit over rated. Seems that when the bike isn't in the garage waiting for me, it is in motion, I am in the saddle and the helmet is firmly affixed to my head. I use standard 1/2 and 3/4 lids, solid colors, and allow the outside to 'age' gracefully. On the occassion that I stop, I routinely leave the helmet, unlocked and draped over the bars or lashed to the rack. I've never returned to find it missing. That all may be a bit different with dolled up, pretty boy paint jobs, and super high tech full faced jobbies. But if it ain't pretty or fancy, It seems that ripping off a used helmet is similar to stealing a pair of dirty britches. My thought on that is that is some poor bloke is hard up enough to take it, he/she needs it pretty badly.
If you feel you really need one, and if you have a backrest/rack, my best advice is to locate it in a way that will enable placing the lid 'top up'. Like someone in a previous reply said, it will just catch water like a bucket. If that happens you might wish someone took it...

40 years of riding and I've never had a helmet lifted. I just attach to the saddlebags using the helmets strap or just leave it sitting on my saddle or saddlebags.
Maybe no one has ever taken my helmet because I usually need a new one and I only spend around $150 for a half shell!

It's not the locking that's an issue so much as just having a place to hang it. Yes you can strap it to the rack if you have one but it would be more convenient to have a ready-made spot. It's easy to drop a hemet strapping it on your tank or whatever. A $20 lock can save someone a $50-100 visor scratch

RedSnap, Just hang it over either of your turnsignals. You can even use a padlock on the D-rings to keep it there.

Thanks for all the advice guys - it is nice to know that the majority of you live in crime free areas - we have a saying " if its not nailed down they will nick it". As I am wanting a new helmet anyway I will try out your advice and see if I can trust them to keep their thieving hands off. I will keep you updated!

In CA, it is illegal to stop and assist broken down motorists because there was a large number of people faking trouble and robbing those who stopped to help. Several other states have also enacted similar laws. So, since you can't stop to help others, why would you need a toolkit on a Triumph?

I use a long hasp key lock for the helmet, and a ski type retractable cable lock for my coat, and run the cable through the sleeve, etc. If the weather is warm, I don't feel like wearing a 3/4 length padded ballistic jacket around a store for any length of time.
I lost a disc lock last week that somehow managed to back a nylock nut off a sissy bar mounting bracket somewhere between CT & Canandaigua. If anyone found it, let me know and I'll send you the keys.

Urban Myth ?
A guy has a Cooker delivered and after getting it out of the box, fills the empty carton with loads of crap from the shed ready to take to the tip. He leaves it outside the side gate of his house ready to load into the car in the morning. As it was raining, he sticks the top down with duct tape and wraps it in an old polythene dust sheet to stop it from getting wet and soggy.
He gets up in the morning and the box is gone !!!!
Myth confirmed - it happened to me last night !
My neighbour asked me if my cooker was OK because he said two men in a white van picked it up about 7:30. He thought it was faulty and being returned !

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Excellent! A new Britlish word. Is a "tip" what we yanks call a junk yard or dump?

Erm.... place to get rid of rubbish/refuse/garbage. Stuff that won't fit in the bin.
I think it's only a Midlands word. I remember saying tip to someone round here, and they looked at me gone out.

Excellent! Yet another English term!
I gurss when you "look at someone gone out", it's like we say "looking at someone like they were crazy".
We are all a funny lot, I guess.
