Riding into work this morning out of Hiram (Georgia) into Atlanta at 0600, I merge onto 75/85 south toward the airport, and just as I get to Turner field, one of the cylinders quits. I see a cop with his blues on off to the side of the 7 lane and limp off the road and pull up behind him for the protection of his lights from the 80 mph traffic. She is still running, but sounds BAD with the valves rattling and all. I decided to try to limp it on to the airport, still some 10 miles away, and BOOM, the other cylinder kicks in and off I go. I make it just north of loop road, and lost it again, had to limp her the rest of the way to work (4 miles now). Naturally there's a group of my co-workers standing where I park, and quickly comment on how crappy it sounds. I grab both headers, and #1 is cold. Don't know if it's fuel of fire at this point, not gonna worry about it, will load her in friends pick-up and drop her off at Coweta Custom Cycles around 11......let them figure it out...

I'm guessing its a fuel issue. I had the same probelm the other day. A stuck float so no gas getting to one clyinder. Its not that bad to fix. Glad to hear you didnt get run over.

losing a cylinder here and there seems to be more common than most issues. Bet its the coil or the ignitor.

My bet is on electrical. Check the wires that go to the coils. I had that happen to me once. Hopefully it will be that simple. If one of them is loose, that would cause it to cut out like that.

The reason I was betting on stuck float was I have had both issues, no spark and no fuel. The intermitent nature would lead towards spark. But if the header was completely cold I would say no fuel to make the fire. Get a spare plug and hook the sparkplug wire to it on the bad side and crank the motor if theres spark then its prob fuel. Or crack the bowl drain on the bad side. This is easy and no gas=no gas every time.

I'm going with a loose plug wire at the box end, mine did the same thing. Plugged it back in, no more problems. jeff

Had the same thing and the only question I have is if you have re-routed your cables due to new handlebars. If you run them under your tank, turning the bike hard to the left will eventually loosen and disconnect your ignition wires. I did this. The EXACT same results. I towed it in to a shop, they pulled the tank off and found the wire un-plugged. Plugged it in and it was fine. Cost me $50 for being an idiot. Happy to pay it with the knowledge it was nothing mechanical.

OT,
Long, long time ago I flew back into Spokane airport the day after Christmas. Go to the parking lot, turn the key, engine won't catch. Call a tow truck, go to a local repair shop, get a motel room, waste 1 1/2 days. I sat around the shop, they were mystified, they finally tracked it down to a bad wire connection running from the battery to the fuel pump in the gas tank (1991 Ford with 2 tanks). The part (shrink wrapped connector) was $5.95 as I remember. The whole episode cost me about $350
I would bet on an electrical issue, but then again maybe the gas tank is nearing empty and when you tilt the bike, fuel only runs into one carb?
Good luck, you'll be riding home tonight

Let's see, the tank is about half full (63 miles on odometer), strong smell of gas when the #1 cylinder decides to quit firing, I have not done anything to the handlebars or wiring, no visible fuel leaking, was very intermittent up till this morning, still under warranty, so I'm not touching it....Bike dropped off at 1:00 this afternoon, started and ran fine (of course), told them to "just fix it".....

Ron and Phil,
Well, "the flop" came down and showed two IGNITORS(a heart and a spade) and a queen o' diamonds!(she always means "money", my friends)
And I'LL BET that just like our own Derek(SalMaglie) of beautiful Tucson Arizona a few months back, Mark here is holding one bad IGNITOR and a queen(both clubs) in the hole.
Cheers, Dwight (ante up)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

When I had a strong odor of gas, and one cylinder running/not running it was a stuck float. At low throttle, gas would flood the one cylinder causing it to stall on one side. After shut down and sitting, the float being stuck for a while would cause gas to flow back into the airbox and pool, thus the gas smell. At acceleration and full throttle, it ran fine because it was burning the gas. I hadn't done anything to cause it. And a whack on the side of the carb fixed it.
Anyway, hope you get it worked out.

I had a similar experience, running on one then the other cylinder would kick in, the bike at the time was under warranty so it ended at the dealers. The mechanic took it for a ride and came back sure enough it was on one cylinder then the other. He put it down to swarf (metal) in the coil, where the lead goes in. I myself think they could not find anything and just fob me off. The bike has run alright eversince though

Any time that happens the first thing to do is as Soren said.....check the coil wires. They pop out REAL easy. Had this happen once when i hit a bump and luckily it was the first thing that came to mind. Pulled over and looked and sure enough it was just hanging there. Popped it back in and was on my way in less than a minute. After that i tie wrapped the rubber boots that hold them in.

Day 2.....They are gonna "TRY" an ignitor unit....no faults found, of course. If I can't get her to Hiram today, some 45 miles, will have to wait till Thursday, as rain is moving in....

There is one sure way to get it to fail. Have a dealer wrench dress up in an overstuffed brown plaid suit and stick a half burnt, well chewed cigar in his mouth. Then announce loudly, "Well, here comes uncle Hiram all the way from (any far away place) just to see how nicely my bike runs!"

Mine did pretty much the same thing...firing on one cylinder = bad igniter. Hope you're covered under warranty, because that part is expensive.
I wonder what's the latest with Procom getting out an igniter for our bikes? Last I heard it was going to be towards the end of the year. Check with Brent before you fork out the money for a Triumph OEM unit.

Picked her up yesterday, replaced ignitor, took the "long" way home (54 miles), no problem. Took nearly 2 hours to ride 54 miles in Atlanta traffic....

Yes... Get them. I have them on my bike, and you definitely notice a difference. I also picked up the Nology wires and NGK Iridium plugs as well. The bike starts much easier, have a bit more ready power and my gas mileage went up. I pikced them all up from Brent at NewSpeedmaster.com. Here are some links: Nology Coils: http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/nology_profire_coil.html Nology Wires: http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/nology_hotwires.html NGK IX Iridium Spark Plugs: http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/spark_plugs.html
You can get the wires in black if you ask nicely.

No, still just as sweet as the day I rode her off the lot, It just does'nt seem like a bike that's not even a year old should stop running....If it was a car, you would never hear the end of it...I was venting a little I guess, as there is ALOT of competiton here at work between bikes and their owners...I did an awful lot of braggin, and now have to eat ALOT of crow!!!
