I have a 17 tooth on my speedy in place of the stock 16. The stock rear is 42. If i went to a 41 and put my 16 back on the front, where would that leave me compared to where i am now? Would i be geared the equivilent of 1/2 tooth higher than i am now? Also, will the chain be too long or can i get away w/o having to lose a link?

Daz, you are now (17/42 = 2.47:1). If you changed to 17/41 you would have a slightly higher ratio of 2.41:1. But, if you change both to 16/41, you would actually have a lower gear ratio than you do now (2.56:1). If you want to gear it higher, either change the front sprocket to an 18/42 (2.33:1) or just change the rear to a 41 keeping your 17 for a smaller ratio change.
Because they are cheap and it is so easy to do, I would try going to 18/42 first. If you like it, you will eventually be able to buy Triumph complete sets to replace your entire drive set up because the new SMs come with 18/42.

Thats what i thought.....17/41=about the same as a theorhetical 1/2 tooth more on the front compared to 17/42, right? Reason i was asking is because there is apparently a sprocket JT sells that DOES fit our bikes but does not come in 42.

You can go with the chain the way it is now, just back out the adjusters to account for losing the two teeth. Your chain will hit the rear stop sooner though, unless you shorten the chain.

In the ratio range our bikes are in, each front tooth is about 2.5 rear teeth. It's very hard to exactly split the difference. You either have to be a little higher or lower than a 1/2 tooth change depending on your front/rear combination. Personally, I'd stick with a steel sprocket. I deliberated on changing to a 18/43 to split the difference between a 18 and 17 (stock 42), but I couldn't find a steel 43 and decided to stick with the 18/42.
If you decide on the 17/41, chain length should adjust ok. From the stock 16/42, you're going up one tooth in front and down one in the rear.

Ramsound......i think the JT sprocket model # jtr1332 will fit our bikes and it DOES appear to be steel since it says "This sprocket is also available in alloy". Someone here in another thread i started (i think in accessories) said they put one on thier america. This is wht i asked about a 41 tooth setup, because it doesn't come in my stock 42. But it does come in 42 and 43. So you may wanna look at that as i am. I just have to determine that it will surely fit. Even tho someone here said they have on on thiers i still worry. So i'm going to check the specs on my sprocket and compared them to the ones on the JTR1332 on this page....(type in "jtr1332")

Dazco, try this link: http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=6006&p=
I think this is the right sprocket for both the TA and SM and 525 chain AND it comes in all sizes including 42. I'm still not sure if they are steel or aluminum though.
After reading the site info, it appears the regular are steel and the alloy are aluminum alloy.

No !!! Thats the one they sent me and it doesn't fit. It's for the bonnies. Thats what i said on that other thread. The JTR1792 does not fit the cruisers even tho JT's site says it does. It's a mistake on thier site and they now know about it after my phone call yesterday. I doubt they'll change it tho. These online manufacturers never seem to correct mistakes even after being made aware. Anyways, the hole pattern is WAY off for our bikes.

Oops! I thought I'd read here that their sprocket model numbers were off. I did notice the bonnies had the same number, but it didn't register at the time. I still don't understand why they don't have a 42 in the correct size since that is standard in all the TAs and SMs.
