Local bike night here had a loud pipes contest so I entered just to find out how many decibels my Epcos with baffles in actually put out. Revved it 5 times to just short of redline and they said I was at 105 decibels. Most of the Harleys there were running 120-125 decibels.

Wonder what it would have been without the baffles? I'm going to pull mine and see what she sounds like! (Specialty Spares)

What? Was that you just starting your bike without the baffles? You're a few miles south? That's where it sounds like it's coming from.

did they also do an iq check on the harley decibels fellows? maybe it's like a truck? the higher the truck, the lower the iq, the higher the decibles...

were the coppers there checking?

sorry, couldn't resist.

Yeah, I've noticed that. The OL's piglet sets off 2 more alarms than does my Triumph going down the street.

You should have done it without the baffles. Just an FYI. My buddy Foolish (Kasey) rides with extra long epco’s on his bike without baffles. Trust me when I say this they are the loudest pipes I’ve ever heard and he could easily drown out any Harley pipe. They are so loud we normally have him ride at the rear of the pack. There’s a shot of his bike in my gallery...

I saw Casey's bike at Clinton, but unfortunately he was too busy selling bikes and I didn't get to hear it running!
I'll definitely have to pull them for at least one ride with my HD buddies - scare'em good!

Sal, Interesting idea. I have a meter at work I can borrow and get results on Beavis's Bubs and my JCWs. In order to do this I do need to know how yours was measured for comparison. Where was the meter measuring the sound distance, height, behind the pipes?? etc etc. And was this in and open area. I am still working on the GA rally and can bring it with me so we could get many different pipes for a final tally on loud.

Just for comparison sake, I wonder how many decibels the stock pipes are?

The meter was about 10-15 feet directly behind the bike. The person holding the meter was sitting in a standard chair and held the meter at the chair's seat heighth. Definitely an open area...parking lot. Of course none of this is scientific, and I don't now what type of meter they had. If it's anything like the analog decibel meter I have from Radio Shack that I use to dial in my home theater system, I wouldn't put much stock in the accuracy. My meter pegs at 130db so anything close to that number isn't going to be accurate.

The stock pipes are <80db and are labeled as such to comply with EPA regs in the USA. Thats why both Singer & Triumph can interchange their silencers.
