Just noticed on my bike that has less than 2000 miles on it that I have a strange random popping or muffled backfiring on both exhausts and header pipes when at idle. When throttling up it continues but is not as audible because of the loud pipes on my machine. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar situation and what was found or done to correct this problem.... Any help provided will certainly be appreciated. Would almost think timing was off but the popping and muffled backfiring is random and not continous at a regular rate....

Check your air mix screws, make sure they are both the same, then adjust them for the best idle. Then balance the carbs.

Check your sparkplugs. Better yet, just swap em out.

Check all the vacuum caps too, and be sure they do not have little micro cracks in them. If they do, replace them all! And maybe even do the crossover with 3/16" tubing from carb to carb on the vacuum plugs, after you balance the carbs.

I certainly appreciate all the inputs to my question. This afternoon looks like I am going to be busy. Will let you all know what I find that corrects the problem. I had totally missed the thoughts on the vacuum caps, thanks Pat. Hope that I get my baby back on the road running right, if not looks like I will be trailering bike to Newnan, Georgia for a warranty repair job..... Thanks once again to all.....

I guess you could check to make sure the rubber boots that hold the carbs to the motor are seated right too.

Well, congratualations to Pat... He hit the source of the problem I had first try out... Amazing, guess it comes with Pat's experience tho, lol... It was a cracked rubber nipple on the left carb that was the culprit, micro-cracks as Pat stated. Well, thanks to him and Advance Auto, my baby runs again... I even purchased spares in the event this ever occurs again while on the road.. I really do appreciate the help provided by all to resolve this problem... In the future, I hope to be able to return the favor to another member in distress.... Thanks again

Just noticed mine are cracked up. They're not that old. Anyone know of better caps? Maybe made out of some kind of space age material?
