Hey all.

I'm looking at going to Australia in March April time. Well it's my nephew's first birthday on the 3rd April and I'm wanting to be there then. Before you ask he lives in Sydney....

I'm looking at hiring a bike for about 12 days and doing a bit of travelling while I'm over there. Last time my sister hired an apartment in Coolangatta and had a proper holiday up there. However my niece was only 4 then and got bored very quickly....so I saw things, but I like to take my time....and couldn't.
I'm aiming to go along the coast, and stop wherever takes my fancy. As long as I'm back in Sydney by the time the bike needs to be taken back....

My questions....

I've found a site that can hire me a Speedmaster. Bike Round Oz but does anyone know how good they are?? Or does anyone know anywhere else that can hire me a SM/America....? I DO NOT want a Harley when I know I can hire a Triumph.....

And

do the Aussie lot fancy a weekend somewhere while I'm over there....???

Heya Gina...

From a quick Google I've found these two that have SM/TBA available in Sydney...

http://www.bikescape.com.au/
http://www.rollingthunder.com.au/ (advertises as HD rentals but also has a SM)

No experience with any of those companys so can't help there. However if you're coming as far north as Brisbane I'd love to show you round.

Remember that March/April is the beginning of winter here and some parts get really cold (have a look at the pics of my ride last week!) so bring/hire cold & wet weather gear. We also legally have to wear helmets in every part of the country. Get yourself an international driver's licence before you come and make sure it's endorsed for bikes. Finally make sure you ride the Putty Road north out of Sydney - it's THE bike road in the country.

I don't have a car licence so would only be for bikes....!

Them two want two years experience.... I'd be 3 months short....but if I include my learner time....perhaps they would include that!

Gina

Dont bother with the Intl Drivers Licence - its really only a translation for countries that don't have English as its first language (Australia just about manages this! )

When I was down there, I managed to rent cars using my normal licence (take both parts!) without any problems.

probably because that's how Australia is pronounced "Oztralia"

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

I can't think of a place I'd rather visit than Australia, but it's not in the cards any time soon. If I ever do get over there maybe Sandmann could do a little scuba diving with me. I'd like to see some of them thar deadly sea critters. I'm always amazed at the number of animals that have developed deadly venoms and so on "down under". Maybe it's the local brew?

I doubt they'd have a big issue with letting you off 3 months, specially since you're after a speedy and not something huge like a HD full dresser.

Something like that... we pronounce it "Os-tray-lee-a" but we say "Aussie" the way Americans say "Ozzy"... so if I'm an Aussie (Ozzy) I must come from the land of Oz

Would be happy to show you round some of my favourite underwater haunts. The critters didn't get venomous from the brew, rather the other way round. What else did you think we make our potent local brews from?

Hi Gina,

No worries coming over help etc. Unless you won lotto since we last met, you will have trouble finding a bike to hire though. Car hire $50/day; Bike Hire $150 / day. - And thats for a 125 - Go figure. I asked why and was told it was insurance. Of course the rent comes down when you want it long term - your link was $131 / day for 21 days for a speedmaster. $131 * 21 = A return air ticket to the UK ! + your insurance excess was half the value of the bike, and another air ticket security deposit.

It may be cheaper to get your cuz to buy you a bike, then sell it again for you after you leave. - you should only loose about half the cost of rental at most.

On the plus side I have joined the Ulysees club here and have a few contacts now - so I will enquire and see if I can find you something, but dont hold your breath.

On the licence front - just bring your UK Licence, no one will care as long as you have a full licence. Remember here they have to get a licence every couple of years, so unless it says when you passed your test on your licence they wont know you only had it a few months, they will think its a renewal. Trust me most officials dont even know how different states work, let alone how the UK works.

Lastly 'The ozzi lot' are split over thousands of miles - its a bit like saying the European lot. You may have to think either NSW or Queensland, and I can not get NSW riders to talk to me on nthe site (but then I am a Pohm )

Oh yes - and we call Australia oz - because we can, Besides if you saw the film and the grand wizard of oz ... well ... take a good look at our prime minister (is that political)

I'm in a save as you earn scheme at work....it pays out in February. I'm determined to do something I'll remember with it. Hence the hire a SM. I'll have about £900 to play with. Just for that. And I know someone at work who used to work for BA and still gets good rates for the flight. Like less than £400....So I'm not worried about the cost at the mo. I may regret that comment in March....

I just have a dream.....I have very few and the Pacific Highway on a Triumph is one of them. Yeah it's a boring road...done it in a car with a screaming kid...sorry adorable niece.....listening to the Wiggles for hour after hour after hour... From Sydney to Coolangatta in Queenland. But I'm not specific as to where I go really - just want to see stuff without having to be in a set place at a set time....isn't that what a holiday is all about?!?
