steering lock

I am having a problem with my steering lock. key in, turning wheel to the left, turn key, lock depresses, wheel locked, key wont come out.

anyone else have this problem?


Yeah it's fast. It's blue and it has flames.

Yeah, when I first received to bike back in '02, the whole key/lock mechanism was tight and kind of hard to work. But as the years rolled by, it's become a snap. I guess it's part of the "break-in period".

Try tilting the bars back and forth a little bit as use attempt to remove the key. That's what I do. And maybe shoot a little WD40 into the lock. I think I did that too when the bike was new.

My steering lock has always been a bit stiff, its better now than when it was new. Ditto what Dwight says, spray a bit of WD 40 in it and in time it will loosen up.

Along with a bit of lube, try gently wiggling the fork back and forth to make sure the lock has completely seated. Mine works best with the fork just a little short of full left.

thanks fellows I final found a sweet spot that seems to work. I will try some W -D also.

Graphite powder works great in locks / keyholes. Might have a little better "staying" power.

Yep, or some light oil. WD-40 evaporates over time and doesn't leave any lubricating residue.
