My Sceptres are going gold after only 500 miles. Is this normal? Kinda makes the bike look regal, just wondering if normal. Thanks.

Did you put those stupid 122 mains in? I just got mine today and they came with 122s! Hell! I had 130s in with the Epcos!! Since Nancy got those I got to drive 160 miles tomorrow for bigger jets!

No, 130s. I didn't believe the 122s came with these as free flowing as they are!

Mine came with the 122s Go figure? The 130s with the Epcos showed a slight gold starting. Put 42 pilots in in place of the 40s but I can not see putting even 130s in at this point! Gonna step up a tad.

As far as I've seen, most any polished stainless steel pipe will turn gold after exposure to heat.

Use some simichrome polish and the gold will wipe away. Lots of elbow grease you will need.

Mine were shipped with 122 mains and 48 pilots. That is what she is running with and has been doing so for 40,000 miles. The Sceptres will gold up around the slip on joint. And a little bit flared off towards the back from the clamps. I have only had to clean the pipes once to remove the gold and another time to keep the gold from re-emerging. I have always wanted to try bigger mains and maybe drop the pilots to 45s but since I don't load-up at idle, I have no flat spots, my plugs are the color of Nawleans (chocolate per Ray Nagin ) and She'll pull a ton when I get her aroused, I ride her and leave the fondling for when she really needs it.

Mine had gone gold near the clamp, I took them off this weekend and was able to polish the gold off with out too much effort. I used some agressive paint polish that is made for getting out bad swirl marks and it worked like a charm. Didn't scratch the chrome and it took the gold off easily. It "should" be safe for the pipes, but if they turn black and fall off in a month, I guess I'll know not to use it again.

Just curious, if the pipes are turning gold, what do the headers look like? My SS pipes have no discoloration after 5000 miles. The headers have had a very small amount of "golding" where they attach to the cylinders. It has cleaned off easily with Semichrome.

In my case, the headers look fine with the exception of a little bluing on the left header pipe, and a little golding at the cylinder like you mentioned.

Here's some nice Golden Scepters;
I bet you could get rid of them with a small dose of Round Up.

I'm really not familiar with the Sceptres, but at only 500 miles it seems unusual. I noticed that nobody asked, has the AI been removed? The leaner the bikes run the hotter and the AI system makes it way too hot. Most unmodified bikes have early bluing due to the AI. If it has been removed, it still could be running too lean. Other Sceptre owners said they have golding on their pipes. The fact that the headers are gold and bluing (and they are double walled) sure sounds like it is running too hot.

Stainless Steel will get a gold tint. Polish them, but SS will do that, it is normal.

Aye! SS does get a bit gold when heated - Simichrome twice a year will fix it. Now at 45,000 miles - Simichrome twice a year works great.
