I have been lirking around and reading stuff for a while and found some really good information. Thanks for everyones contribution. Now I have a question: I have an 06 Speedy with TB pipes. Recently I installed K&N filter, removed the snorkel and AI, and rejetted(just main jet). I notice now that I have less power through the middle than I had before and now I get a pop under my seat when I crank the throttle from idle. Anybody ever get that pop(explosion) or know how to fix the middle power loss?

I'm gonna say adjust your air mix screws for best idle, and look into some TBS needles. I like to make difinitive statements like I know what I'm talking about, then when someone agrees with me I feel all good about myself

You did not say if you re-adjusted your pilot air screws. They should be re-set to at least 3 1/4 turns out. You need a D-tool to adjust them Brent sell them on his site. make sure you order the carb screw set also.
Turn them all the way in until they seat and then back them out 3 1/4 turns. Then take her for a ride you may have to re-adjust another 1/4, but I think 3 1/4 will do it for you.

That "seat pop" is a back fire and WATCH OUT for your AIRBOX...THAT back fire is what BLEW UP my airbox...DEF look into TBS needles (Benny your right) they eliminated the bad flat spot I had and are a simple, cheap fix...3-1/4 sounds about right + - 1/4-1/2 turn and remember both carbs MIGHT not be the SAME # of turns...then SYNC your carbs when your done!

poppy, I did adjust the idle mix when I got the pipes, but I can see they need to be adjusted again now that I have installed a new jet and filter. I did get the allen set and they are definately nicer to use.
bill and rob, thanks for the warning about the exploding box. I will be carefull.
well off to adjust the idle mix. i will let you know how it goes. then i will order some TBS needles.

Although a few people may disagree, I think that using a hole saw to put a 2 inch hole in the middle of the bottom of the airbox, and matching it with a hole in the middle of a K&N filter, gives the over pressure of a backfire somewhere to go besides destroying the airbox. In addition to giving you a LOT more air to your carbs when not refluxing back through the filter.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I adjusted the idle mix and it fixed the pop. It still needs to be dialed in a little more but I getting the TBS needle soon so I will adjust again then. I am also going to go with the 42 pilot jet from the stock 40 and try the shims with the new needle. disney, thanks for the sugg. I may do that too in the near future depending on how these other mods work out. Do I need to seal the bottom end somehow where the air will be coming in from the bottom? I dont remember there being any foam on the bottom of the K&N.

Execellenbt point. That may be the key reason I shall go ahead and cut that hole in the bottom of the box. Might save me from one of those cold morning hard start K-bangs.

Crumb,
What I did was take a peice of screening the kind you buy to replace a torn window screen. I cut two pieces in a 2.5 ' circle. In then took a peice of foam cut that in a 2 1/4 circle. Sandwiched the two together and tacked it together with crazy glue.
It fit perfect over the 2" inch hole I drilled in the bottom of the box and airfilter lined up perfectly.
Put it all back together and took it for a long ride the other night and I double checked it today and is working just like it should.

The needles will make a big difference. the bike is lean from the get go, but pipes and K&N and snorkel removed will make it very lean in the mids. I''ll make a prediction that when you pop those needles in you're gonna be in for a very pleasent suprise. I didn't touch my needles till after i did what you did and the difference just shimming them was considerable. I've since messed with the jetting a good bit and i always find it's the needles where all the changes seem to happen.
