Throttle control cable installation?

I swapped out my control cables with stainless a while back
and had little to no trouble putting in the "open" cable.
Installing the closed cable was really, really difficult.
I ended up using pliers (stupid) to pull the internal cable into place at the hand grip. Obviously I did carb side first, leaving as much slack as possible. Kinked the cable but was functional for six months. Then it broke right where I used the pliers. Fortunately I was 1 block from home. A friend who has 35+ years of working with bikes, mostly antique Harleys, BMWs, Hendersons, etc. helped me put the stock "close" cable back. Also very tough. Now I want to put a new replacement stainless back on (without imposing upon Charlie who is very busy with his own restorations) but am very hesitant to do so because of the previous difficulties.
Has anyone any suggestions for this, what I assumed would be, a relatively simple task. Should I have done the grip
side first and then the carb side? I am haunted by my lack of knowledge. Previous to owning this machine I hadn't done any wrenching on anything since replacing brakes on a '71
VW back in the day. But I have done internal wiring for the
handlebars, sprocket swap, gaiter installation according to the great instructions supplied by the group here (for which I am eternally grateful). What am I doing wrong? It's an '04 America.
Thanks.

To undo, or do up the cables, I do this. Loosen them at the grip as much as possible, then loosen the one on the carb that is on the left, whichever that is. The top nut on that is easiet to get at with a wrench (8mm). So I release that cable from the BRACKET on the carb, but not the actual throttle. That gives me enough slack to remove the cables. Putting them back on, I put the pull cable in first, and fish the close cable back behind the bar thru the housing, I put the ferrule partially into the hole, then run something small and smooth (a nail?) up under the cable till it can slide into the slot and push the ferrule in. Then replace the cable on the carb end, adjusting it back to where I had it, and take up the rest of the slack at the grip end of things.
Clear as mud?

Hold the throttle mechanism on almost fully on the carbs when installing the cable, much easier to fiddle with it then. The spring is kinda strong, so be quick as it cramps the fingers quickly too.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

Putting them back on, I put the pull cable in first, and fish the close cable back behind the bar thru the housing,
So both cables are now in their respective brackets, The left (pull - open) and right (push - close)
Then replace the cable on the carb end, adjusting it back to where I had it
I thought they were already on the carb end? It seems that way from your description. The adjusting nuts on the carb end are never totally removed, right? Just spread apart as far as possible?
Sorry for being so dense.

Right. On the carb sided, the cable on the left, there are two nuts sandwiching it on that bracket. I loosen the top one. Then you can wiggle the cable off that bracket (towards the right of the bike). That frees up a LOT of play in the cables. I leave the bottom nut, cause A: it's hard to reach, and 2: it's a position indicator so I just tighten the top one down again and I know I'm in the same place.
