Was I dreaming or did I see one of these Mixture thumbscrews somewhere? My search continues.... Anyone have input on using it? (if it wasn't a dream)

I havent tried the thumbscrew but I havent read anything good about it either. What I did was get a d-shaped end from motionpro: http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/90_degree_1-4_hex_driver/ It has a d-shape on one side and a quarter inch allen hex on the other side so I just used(I think) an extra quarter inch quarter inch socket(yes I meant to say that twice) that I had laying around. The d-shaped piece also has a ball bearing in it so it wont slip out of your socket. Now I have my tool that cost less than $7 and took no time to make. And it works great.

Same here......never read anything good bout em, but many have said they caused problems. Apparently the taper is not the same as the stock ones. At least one person posted that he put his stock ones back in after having problems. i'd pass if i were you, especially considering that once your bike is dialed in you'll not need to touch them for a long time. I slotted mine, the took a serewdriver bit and pounded a volume knob from an audio dvice onto the end. It's now just about as easy as a thumbwheel would be because it's just like having a thumbwheel ! Only difference is you have to slip it in, but hey.......that just makes it an even more pleasurable experience.

I will be passing on it. It is just a burning hand bear trying to get that left one adjusted. Ride 10 miles, burn hand, ride 10, burn. When will it end? I just can't get rid of a nasty backfire I'm getting. I've had the screws just about everywhere but to no avail. I have a post about that in misc. (just in case) http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...p;page=0#134924

I remember reading somewhere that a member was not happy with them because they had a tendency to vibrate loose or at least change there setting

My bike is running fine with thumbscrews from Bellacorse.com. However, for $40, I'd just keep the stock ones and bodge up some sort of cut-down screwdriver.

thats what i did as i said in my last post, and i never burn my hand. A power driver but with a audio knob pounded onto the end is just like having thumbscrews once you slot the screws.
Reido113.....as to the backfires. I used to get those for a short time but jetting resolved it. I can't say which setup caused it and which relieved it, but the neddles believe it or not have had the most effect on resolving popping and backfire issues for me. I think a properly jetted bike won't pop or backfire. So it may just be that you need to get the bike jetted right. Also, maybe consider a differnt pilot since the screws aren't helping. Might just be the pilot size is too small to allow the screws enough range to rid the problem.

I have them also and do not have any problems. They are definitely a finer taper but not by an extreme amount. Next time I am dinking with the carbs, I will remove them and do a comparison to the stock screws. Tuning them is in 1/16 turns instead of 1/4 turns like I used to do with the stocks pilot screws. Right now, I have ZERO decel popping. Do I muck with them a lot? No, but when I go up to the mountains, I do change them (more turned in) from where there are set to here. If I don't, the carbs pop like yota on beans! I find them very convenient....

Just FYI - We have in the works our own mixture thumbscrews. We're going about it the proper way, which is to take the stock screws and make the new ones based on the exact measurements of those. Made SPECIFICALLY for our bikes, these will work exactly like the stock screws. I hope to have them ready in a few weeks.

Brent, and all... I did that. Had a set made same as stock. With my setup, the bike popped on decel like crazy and I couldn't "tune" it out with the thumbscrews. I installed the stock screws and had the same results - popping like crazy. I went back to the HD thumbscrews and the bike runs fine with no popping at about 1 1/4 turns out. A little rich, but not enough to worry about. '03 America Stock pilots, 130 mains, TBS needles, slides drilled, snorkels out, airbox and stock filter drilled - 1 3/4 hole, Thunderbike pipes.

Hey Grump - Yeah, I read all about your experience. We've found that a very small percentage of these bikes are impossible to adjust out the popping with the stock screws. It sounds like your bike falls into that category. We're making the screws for the vast majority where the carbs tend to react well to the stock measurements. We'll see how testing goes...
