By the way, if you have your bike at work, it will say it right on the brake reservoir cover (provided you haven't put any decals over it)

You will have a difficult time finding a strict, stand alone DOT4. Most places sell a combo dot3/dot4. Prestone makes a DOT4.

You can switch to DOT 5 too, but you need to replace the rubber parts and thoroughly clean the system out first. The dOT 5 is harmlesss to paint and such, but also much harder to find. You should not mix the 3 and 4 either, use one or the other. If you go to the combo3/4 stuff, be sure to drain all the old stuff first. That should be replaced every two years at least anyway.

They use DOT-4. You can use DOT-5, BUT you must first remove every spec of the old stuff and make sure nobody ever tops off your master cylinders with DOT-4 or DO-3!!! If you mix 3 or 4 with 5, they react and form a mess with the consistancy of cold jello.
Specwise, 5 is about equal to 4 but might have a slightly higher boiling temp but, it is silicon based so it doesn't eat paint.

I am not any kind of chemist I admit, but it is all pretty much synthetic. 3&4 are silicon based where 5 is some new fangled super-de-duper polymer stuff. Google will hurt your brain if you search it. It works, that's all I care about. I use 4 by the way. I can get it easily. I have SS lines to install someday, and will go to 5 then since that is also easily available to me at mega-autoparts heaven down the road. BUT 5 is twice as much to buy. So maybe I won't. or maybe I will, oh crap, I need beer, it's friday for me!

AFAIK, DOT 5 fluid, being a synthetic, doesn't attract moisture like DOT 3 or 4, which is why you need to flush the system every two years with 3 or 4.
Greybeard is right, DOT 5 also has a higher boiling point.

Couldn't find any straight 4. The stuff I got said exceeds Dot 3 and 4 specs. I have to replace whole rear master cylinder as the other one broke in two, should have all fluid replaced there. Will keep pumping front till it's new also. Thanks ModelMaker
