I have read that there is something you can modify with the carbs to rid the popping problem. I just can't get used to it. I have adjusted the air mix 3 turns and still I get it. It seems to pop more when warmed up. Also when i decell it's always there. I had pipes installed when i purched the bike, it does sound better with them. My service is coming up and i will inquire about the popping. Thanks guys as always

If you have any small leaks in the exhaust (check the header connections first!), or around the carb boots, you will have popping. You will never get rid of all of it either, just get it so it's not exploding and obnoxious. You can also up your pilot jets one size if you live in higher elevation or it is very dry where you live. But then you need to set the screws alomost all the way back in. Play with it, you'll eventually get it right.
edit: Hey, I got it, go see Phil, he lives right around you someplace I think.

Doing fine, thanks for asking! I can come over on either the 19th or 20th if you have the time. I know we can straighten out that popping. I can bring my carb balancer too. Sounds like you have a D-tool for the mixture screws?

Sounds like Phils got you covered........nice! FYI, I was at 3.25 before 95% of my popping went away. Good luck.

Phil you are most kind for suggesting this. Where do you live? Are you on the east coast. You have worked on these carbs before I guess. And you say you can rid the popping.

Yeah, you could say I am a bit familiar with these carbs I live in Sunrise, just west of Ft. Liquordale so a trip over there would be all of two hours max. I'd probably take the Trail over and back, much nicer than Alligator Alley. Janet is going out of town for the weekend so I can do darn near anything I want to (and I will! ) for those two days. I am also betting that I can either eliminate the decel popping or get it to be a LOT less especially if we balance the carbs. Everything might take 30 minutes. I tell you what, if I get rid of the popping, you buy me lunch; if not, I'll buy!! How's THAT for a deal!! I am PMing you my cell..........

First off, did you get rid of the air injection? That is equal to a serious exhaust leak. If that's gone, try backing out the mixture screws another 1/4 turn at a time. If you get to 4 turns or more, you either have an exhaust leak or you need the next bigger pilot jets. I found that, with my Epco pipes, I can tune away all popping, but it costs me about 10 MPH of topend. Tuned for best idle speed, the bike is much faster and it only pops a little after the engine gets below about 2300 RPM.

Careful doug, have you seen Phil, that could be rather expensive for you.
Naw, don't worry, Phil can fix you right up, he really does know his butt from a hole in the ground.

I drilled the air box, removed the AI, rejeted to 132's/42 and turned the air screws out 3 and 1/4 turn. took the two rear baffles out on stock pipes 06TBA went to an 18 tooth sprocket. Put is all back together fired right up no popping on decel. was popping big time before I re-jet. She is strong and purrs while idling.
I just followed Pat's instuctions to the tee and everything worked out fine.
