Riding up through the Tennessee mountains a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a "Hillbilly Press" circular at a convenience store while getting gassed up. It's just one of those local circulars with local sponsors that finance it, and includes brain teasers, hillbilly folklore, mountain sayings, and such. One of the "brain teasers" has me stumpped, and has been driving me crazy. It goes like this: "3 Hillbilly's wanted to go in on a motel room for $30 a night, so each one contributed $10 toward the room. After realizing the men were "hillbillies", he decided to give them a $5 discount, and sent the bellboy to give them the $5. The bell boy could'nt figure out how to equally divide the money among the men, so gave them each $1, and kept $2 for himself, making the total price for the room $9 a piece. Easy so far, right? Well maybe. If you have 3 hillbillies payin $9 a piece, this comes to $27. The bell boy kept $2 for himself for a total of $29, where is the other dollar? I guess I'm the frikkin hillbilly for not being able to figure it out, duh....

The math is wrong.
If they had been charged $27.00 for the room originally, they would have each given the manager $10.00, and each received $1 change, making the math problem 9+9+9=27, and 27+3=30, the $3 being the key. Instead, the way the problem reads, it is turned into 27+2=29, which is where the confusion lies. The problem should be $25 (room rate) + $2 (what the bellboy kept) = $27, and $27 + $3 (the change the three guys received) = $30.
