I know it is a normal noise and it is even more noticable with overhead cams like ours, But thickining the oil up to 20W-50 sure does help eliminate most of it. I can't believe they put 10W-40 in our bikes. Might as well use water at that point. I don't mean to get into a big oil battle. I swear.. But I sure noticed a difference all the way around when I went to Mobile V-Twin fully synthetic 20W-50. Get that 10W-40 out of your bike! Our rpm's are way too much for this water. And kiss the majority of that clicking/ticking noise goodbye. Unless you ride in the snow, then maybe 10W-40 would be appropriate huh?

I dont know. I wonder if 10W40 would be a better winter weight oil for those early morning cold starts?

I think most people already do use 20-50. I use it myself, and the same type as you, Vtwin. Valvoline also makes a bike oil that is NOT synth, but it's even quieter than Vtwin. I tried it and it did quiet the engine down, especially when cold where i'd say it was a good 50-60% quieter. But it will cost you in terms of power. I lost a fair bit of accelleration and therefore went back to Vtwin a week later.

I disagree, you run what you like but the low number is more critical than the high number. If you'd like I can send you the motor oil bible. You may want to read why or when you should or shouldn't be running 20W in your bike. Most wear occurs at startup and the low number gives better retention and startup protection. PM me with your email and I'll the motor bible PDF. It's very long but you can skim through and then make your own judgement.

I just couldn't believe my eyes when that 10W-40 flowed out like water after 1400 miles. And how the 20W-50 just smoothed the motor over. Ecsp after a couple thousand miles with a 17 tooth sprocket 75-80mph in 100 degree temps.
I would love to check out the info. My e-mail is on the way. Thanx

Huh? Maybe if there was big chunks of sand in the oil but I have a very hard time believing this!

Ahhhh Oil talk. It's been dam near a week. I use the 5w-40 Shell Rotella T full synthetic diesel oil YES diesel oil, $14 a gallon at Wally Mart. The blue jug. PureOne PL14612 filter (from AutoZone for $5). The PL14610 is the same just 1/2" longer. I got 24,000 miles, big bore and she is happy as a fly in a pile of poop at any temperature at any speed.(or throttle position for the anal Litz)
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.
