Is it normal for these bikes to give a bang and a lurch (or some variant thereof) when shifting into first gear, either from neutral or from second gear?
I've got 1110 miles on her and am on my 2nd oil change (once at 50 or so miles and again at 500). I'll run synthetic shortly, as soon as I'm sure the motor's 100% broken in.

Yeah, it happens almost always. If you let it idle with the choke out and squeeze the clutch lever and release it quickly a few times it sometimes, but not always will make it shift into first quietly. I think it is because we have "wet" clutches and the oil makes the clutch plates stick together. I don't think it does any harm, but it is a little annoying.
if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

This is also pretty normal for newer bikes (less than 1000 miles) it does help a lot when you get the breakin oil out and go to the synthetic stuff.

I wouldn't call it a "bang and a lurch". It's more like a clunk and a shudder and it happens mainly when the bike is cold.

I'm still learning my bike, and I'm not an authority on this, but I have owned several Triumphs over the years and they all cluck to some extent when shifting into first gear. More so when they are cold.
You mentioned a shudder which I do not get on my bike a shudder and cluck are two different things.

Good luck and good riding.

If this is just on the first startoff of the day, it will usually go away if you pull in the clutch lever before starting the engine and rock the bike back and forth in gear untill the clutch breaks loose. Wet clutches tend to stick seriously when sitting overnight. This will also happen if the clutch is off adjustment or the idle speed is too high.

The "shudder" I was referring to is when the bike is cold and you first put it into first gear..... Thanks for the info about Pat and Benny.....

Had the synthetic put in mine Saturday. I gotta say the shifting is distinctly smoother... But, I've gotta try that rocking back and forth thing with it in gear before you start it idea.
