Just heard today. The Who are going on tour. I think this is their first tour in 20 years. So far there are only 13 gigs scheduled for North America, but more may be added. Details are on this web site. http://www.thewhotour.com/I think tickets start at $50 and go up to $100, or there abouts. I think a trip to New York City is in my future. There is a press conference from Berlin on XM Radio now on Deep Tracks Channel 40

The Stones suck! The Who reigns supreme!
I have seen The Who twice in the last 12 years. I believe the farewell tour I was at 12 or so years ago they did the full Quadrophenia album. Awesome! I then saw them very, very shortly after John Entwistle passed (RIP) in 2002. They did more of mix of ther new and old stuff. Good show. They actually did a really good job of keeping the bass out of the spot lite too much in order to be a little sensitive to John's passing. Very well done.
Are they going to be visiting Chicago?

I saw them in '96/'97 for one of the "last tours" and it was great. The Quadrophenia tour was good also - Billy Idol played the Sting part and Gary Glitter did his thing. Also caught the one here at the Hard Rock that was re-scheduled after Entwistle died. I may or may not know some people that stopped by his room an hour before he passed...

Airguy.
I saw them back in the 80's in London. They were brilliant. Cant remember who was drumming for them, i think it may have been Simon Phillips, but i could be wrong. I know Zak Starkey was with them for a while.
Just been doing some snooping around around the web and it seems Zak Starkey is playing drums for them on this tour and Pino Palladino will be playing bass. Ive seen Pino before, he is a great bass player, first saw him when he played with Paul Young.
Im getting more excited.

I saw the Who in '73,'75,'79,'81,'97,'02 and '04.
I saw the Stones in '73,'75,'78,81,'94,'97,'02,'04.
With the exception of the Stones '73 show in Hawaii(when Mick Taylor was with the band) the Who rule in intensity. And that includes the last show I saw them at. But the '02 show(1st show right after Entwhistle died) was very intense, like JE was looking down on them. I remember the '75 show being very sloppy. I look forward to seeing them again.

The source for all your Waits info: http://eyeballkid.blogspot.com/"We need to go to Tennessee to pick up some fireworks, and someone owes me money in Kentucky," says Tom Waits about why he’s chosen this particular time and route to tour. Central US, Early August. No Waits tix for me but I got some for my dad for his birthday. The Who opens in Philly... that might be fun. Plenty of Who tix still left there too.

hmmm...a few Canadian stops in that tour, too...Calgary and Edmonton are in my vicinity...never seen them, maybe now's my chance. You know, it's funny, but an old friend of mine (RIP Toasty) was really big into the Who back in the 70's and I thought they were OK...but I turned onto them big time about 10 years ago.

The Who played here in Bristol a couple of weeks ago... I didn't go, but on the park where I was, I could hear it. I was a couple of miles from the football ground where they were playing... and they were sounding good!!!

its not really the WHO, how can it be??? half the band is dead!!!! the yr. Entwhistle died he had been on tour with Ringo and Ringo's all starr band. i have a friend that was also on that tour. when they played Lauderdale i was invited backstage and had the opertunity to sit and talk with him and a couple other guy's that were in that band. John was a super nice guy!!! he didnt have to give me (a nobody) the time of day but he sat next to me on the couch and had a real conversation as we were raggin on Billy Preston for eating a whole bag of oreo's hahahahahaha that was an awsome night!!!! my wife had never been backstage and she couldnt believe we were hangin with these guy's, she still talks about it. she was never a big fan of the WHO but she is a fan of Entwistle's after that night. i seen the WHO a couple times in the 80's one time was at the silverdome in pontiac mi, i was in the nose bleed section and it was like watching a godzilla movie hahahahaha by the time the sound got to where i was they were already on the next verse hahahahaha Townsend would jump up in the air, strum his guitar and his feet would be back on the floor before i heard it (talk about wierd) Townsend.....the 2 chord master hahahahahahaha anyway, who's left in the WHO??? daltry, townsend, who else??? will they be playing in wheelchairs hahahahahahaha??????? (couldnt resist hahahaha)and i thought pete was deaf these days??? Entwistle had one of the loudest bass guitars i have ever heard, him and Mel Schacher (G.F.R.) speaking of which, if Mark Farner comes to your town.....GO!!!! if you liked G.F.R. you will be glad you went!!!!! dont bother going to a G.F.R. concert don and mel SUCK!!!!! but Farner is Grand Funk!!!!! anyway i just wanted to say how nice a guy John Entwistle was....R.I.P.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Who?
I got a better question, "WHY?"
The Who was a good rock band. They must have attended Garth Brooks' school of stage hijinks, as did KISS. Both groups rode the coat tails of other bands in the Rock & Roll rage. I am not condemning The Who - they WERE good. I am just saying this won't me a "Steel Wheels" type tour. I just can't imagine seeing Roger Daltry dancing around stage with a cane. (of course Mick Jagger did surprise me 11 years ago). Hope you enjoy the concert.

Who's coat tails did The Who follow?
Who's coat tails did Kiss follow?
How many bands have followed their coat tails?
Both acts always seemed pretty Fricken original to me.

Who's?
Excuse me, I didn't mean to step on your......
Yeah, real original - both of them. Do you have a MillyVanilly record laying around somewhere? The Who will not sell out very many venues on their latest, greatest tour. That's why there are so few appearances - they know they're not that good.
I was a Who fan in their heydey. But even then, they were very mediocre. OK, go rent the TOMMY ROCK OPERA video, and you'll see what I mean. Trashing a guitar on stage is an act of rock & roll mediocrity - you don't make good music so put on a show. That's what Garth Brooks does, that's what KISS did. Compare The Who to the Beatles, compare them to Steely Dan, compare them to Black Sabbath, The Who is mediacre, at best. Compare them to The Allman Brothers, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, It's A Beautiful Day, Pablo Cruise, and Wet Willy - still, mediocrity. The Who was the worst popular band to ever escape the British Isles.
My question remains - WHY?
Ride Safe,

Skillet, To each, their own, however, I choose to agree with that opinion for the most part. And that's why WE won't get fooled again.
As a side, though, I must say that The Who dudes did accompany me through a drug induced haze or two.

Hey Newt, I am listening to Clapton's last tour with Billy Preston as I read your post. Man, that guy was a perfect compliment to about everyone he backed. It is cool that you got to spend time with such a tortured genius (RIP). Clapton is back out on Tour with new material this year. I am thinking of catching the show in Jacksonville. He may be playing Tampa which is where I saw he and Preston. Always a fantastic, professional show.
These superbands of the past keep touring, because nothing around today compares. Sure, there is some decent music but against the mega-groups and poets of the 60's-70's, they are all amateurs.
Just my opinion, as I hum "Bell Bottom Blues". Preston made that song even better, and I would never have imagined that being possible.
Ride Safe.

Oh NO !! I see what you're up to!! ... find out when I'm coming ... get some biiig party organised ... dancin' girls, marching bands, meet the Mayor ... come to thinnnk of it, if that's your plan .. JFK 11:15am .... That's probably too early for getting mullered, eh? Even for an ex-pat !!
By the way, if the band does requests, anything by Hendrix or Paul Weller. If it's jazz / dixie, Bix Beiderbecke would be great, OK? Ta.
And NO sleezy dancers, right?
Well ... maybe just a couple ..

hey Ryan...Bell Bottom Blues!!!!!!! YES!!!! in my very humble opinion one of the best songs ever laid down on tape!!!!!! and to tell ya the truth, i have never really known why i feel that way hahahahahaha maybe it has something to do with the girl i was with the first time i heard it hahahahahaha she used to take our jeans, split them up the leg seams, and insert some material to make them huge bellbottoms hahahahahaha aint sure??? all i know is, i have always loved that song!!!! and Billy Preston was one of the greatest overlooked under appreciated keyboardest of all time. and i told him that to his face that night. in the concert for Bangladesh there is a moment when Harrison is introduceing the band and when he is finished he sez "have i forgotton anybody??" "i've forgotton Billy Preston" great moment in rock video. but that night backstage in the sunrise theater, to watch him devour a bag of oreo's was priceless!!!!! he wouldnt give any to anybody and we were all laughin so hard my ribs hurt thinkin about it. it wasnt long after that he passed and Entwistle passed. i figure i was very lucky to be there when i was, these guy's were both legends in there own time. Bell Bottom Blues!!!!! you made me cry!!!!! originaly recorded by E.Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, and Mr. Duane Allman!!!!!!! one of the greatest bands to ever put out just one album Derek and the Domino's thanks for reminding me, now where did i put that album, and i wonder if the stylus on my turntable is still useable. does anybody know if that is available on C.D.???? (not the song, the album)i think i would like to add that to my collection.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Gimme a freaking break....
... Quadrophenia, Tommy, nobody else had the balls to do anything like that when they did it. As a matter of fact I can't think of too many others that did. The Beatles, c'mon?! They were the In Sync of their time. Marketing, marketing, marketing. Must have been wonderful for them to have a bunch of 13 year old girls screaming at them in appreciation of their fine musical talents. Yeah, right. At least as they grew so did their musical skills and breadth of music. The Stones, couldn't get any satisfaction then and can't now. Didn't they go disco in the late '70's. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Yep, as I grew up Sabbath was the way to go, Kiss licked donkey balls. But to compare The Who's music to Barf Brooks and Kiss (my a s s) is like comparing Glenfiddich 16yr. to Jack Daniels (swill IMHO). Who's Next and Baba O'reilly, 5:15, Magic Bus, Squeeze Box, etc., etc., etc., etc. The Who had and has tons of musical talent and innovation. Just because they caught on to a gimmick that got them noticed and some record label contracts does not mean they didn't have talent. They, like anybody else, did what they had to to make it. I 'spose you're a Cat Stevens fan too.

For all you neay sayers....Lets see Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cleveland, Ohio. Oh year they were inducted a number of years ago. Went last year. Had a an hour movie of The Who. Got the impression the group grew to hate TOMMY. Said every time they were on stage had to do TOMMY songs. So if they were good enough for the The Rock Hall they must have done something and can we say Original. A child of the summer of love. Not a product of but a participant of. Doc

I think that a lot of the ho-hum feeling towards the Who, and many others, for that matter, stems from the fact that radio back then would play to death anything that was good. Witness "Srairway to Heaven", arguably one of the best rock and roll songs ever, but I really can't stand it anymore 'cause the radio stations played it about four times every hour. And Zep never even released any singles!! But they would play it to get listeners and sell advertising. AH, the dollar again. The love whichof starts everything evil. Including ruining good rock 'n roll

Man are you guys stuck in the past or what, sheesh?! . BTW I struck gold today on two new re-releases. "James Cotton 100% Cotton" to replace the vinyl copy I gave a friend back in 1979, and "The Worst of the Jefferson Airplane" to replace a scratched, warped album stored safely in a milk crate. Me, and possibly one or two others had a thing for Gracie Slick .
