Question: Should a pillion lean into the curve, away from the curve, do nothing and let me do the leaning.. ie, is a passenger merely a passenger or should they contribute in some way to the dynamics?

Hi, Rich,

Your passenger should keep his/her body aligned with yours but their head should "look into the turn" just over your shoulder. In other words, no excessive leaning, if turning right, look right.

And with a passenger, unless in a formal on-track race, no excessive over lean on your part. In other words, no knee dragging when taking curves/turns.

My 2¢.

You beat me to it. *I* don't lean relative to the bike myself. Just countersteer and go with it. But it is hard to explain that to a passenger. Yes we are leaning, but I am not leaning ON my bike, everything is leaning together.

Best if they don't move relative to the bike. It is a real pain when rider and passenger are both steering.
It can be a real problem when your passenger rides too, they tend to automatically lean into or out of a bend and make steering difficult. It's something they can't help, as they are used to managing the bike.

I heard somewhere that a passenger should sit like a sack of potatos. My GF's daughter (she's 15) is the perfect passenger, besides the little bit of extra weight, you can't even tell she is there.

I think those who don't ride themselves make the best passengers. The only time I was ever confident riding pillion was with my Dad, a long time ago. Today I would be terrified.

When I took my MSF course I saw that they actually offered a two up riding course that teaches your pillion how to be a pilion. It might be good for guys trying to get their wives into going on rides with them.
