make a recomondation... I'm looking for someone to do some polishin of the aluminum on my SM like this. Called one shop & was basically told they send it out for work... if that's the case I'd rather go direct to save some $$... anyone?

I would talk to any of the local shops to see who they use or I might try to use the Thomas Registry to look up local metal work/fab/conditioning shops or plants. I will be needing to find some local support along these lines myself very soon. Let me know if you have any luck. If I run across something I'll let ya' know.

If you want to do it yourself, this stuff

will polish aluminum to a chrome like appearance. It's a lot of work though.

I'd start out with buffing wheels and compounds, then finish with the Nevr-Dull wadding compound

http://www.hobbytool.com/polishing-instructions.htm

It's a bit messy, as the buffing wheel material and compound flings off pretty readily. Building a simple cardboard shield around 3 sides of the work space / wheel and a shop apron wouldn't hurt to make the job a little more appealing.

The good news is the Speedmaster wheels are constructed so that a buffing wheel would hit around 99.9% of the surface area, except maybe for surface inside the wheel slots in the back wheel.

Now, whatever you do, don't ever take the lid off of this stuff, set it on the ground, stand back and take turns with your friends trying to flick matches into the can.
Escpecially when on a ship in the middle of nowhere.

Ohh, it works great on brass, but I don't know about chrome.

As you are likely aware, polished aluminum usually oxidizes, and turns back to dusty looking metal. A little touch up buffing now & then may be required down the line.

Alcoa has developed a process to make polished aluminum keep it's shine in truck wheel applications, but I have no clue how they do it. Maybe they peen the shine into the alloy? Dunno.

Ha... at first read I thought you (LJ3000) had a typo & were tryin to be funny & meant pee... then I actually used my brain.

The prospect of doin the polishing myself really ain't gonna happen & the need for possible more work later leads me to feel that I'll be looking into getting them chromed & then if any place that does polishing has any suggestions regarding any kind of sealer to eliminate the need for reworking the parts down the road.

FYI - anyone who may be interested in doin similar things... I work in the fastener industry & have already asked my production guys that deal with platers to get me some info on local ppl who have the ability to chrome things as big as the rims...

thnx everyone for the input

So after the initial buffing, how much polishing is required? Is it a yearly thing? Weekly? Just a quick once over. Been thinking of doing this but don't want to set myself up for too big a headache.
