I am looking at getting a triumph speedmaster; vendor has a 2004, good condition, with 1,600 miles, and a couple of 2006 brand new Speedmasters. Other than the price difference, which is $1,800.00; what other differences are their. Apologize, as I am a bit of a newt when it comes to these things, need some guidance. thanks, Zeke

I think the 790cc verses the 865cc. What was the first year of the 856cc?

Pretty sure MY '05 was the first to get the 865. Besides that, the '04 won't have adjustable levers, and the final gearing is a little different.

You'll just have to ride both of them and decide.

Depends on how much value you put on the warranty and the resale. If you buy the new one the repairs on on them til 2008 and you have better low end torgue with the 865.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Save the cash and get the 2004. Staring in '05, the Speedmasters have a slightly larger motor. However, even though it produces a little bit more torque, it produces less HP.

Does the 04 have any mods (Pipes, seat, etc.)?

mmmmm. torque. Gotta get the 865. Warranties are great. Plus, you get to break in the bike.

04 is the better deal. add pipes and all and it has more to enjoy. The low end torque matters only if plan on spending all your time riding from 0 to 15 mph.

1600 miles ain't nothin. Far from broke in, yet. If it hasn't been dropped, it's as good as a new bike. When would the warranty expire on the '04?
You aren't going to adjust those levers much, and those that can't adjust don't miss it. Besides - you get them set, your done. You would never adjust them again. No different than getting used to the ones that don't adjust.
You would find the 790cc motor more than adequate. I don't know what the 865cc brings, but the specs are pretty close anyway, with the '04 having the most horses.
Same colors? You really can't go wrong. Was the '04 originally sold at the same dealer?

My vote is for the 04. You can always big bore the 790 and get tons more torque and hp than the 865, for way less than the price difference too.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.
