Now that sucker has one serious big bore!
Congrats to NASA for a job well done.
How was it Moe? Right out your back door isn't it?

Drove up to Cocoa Beach (about 15 miles from launch site) to watch the launch. What a sight. Could hear the roar and about 4 minutes after lift off when the shuttle broke the sound barrier the sonic boom blasted everybody. That was the best roman candle I have seen today. Beach was crowded and everyone was yelling and going crazy. It made this a really special Independence Day. God Bless the USA! Doc

Hey Okie, where abouts are you? I watched the launch from my front yard in Satellite Bch....just wanted to miss the holiday traffic. What a picture perfect launch. Congrats to the launch team and crew, hard to top that for fireworks!
later, Tom.
But, what do I know?

I lived in Melbourne for a couple of years and the launches were a great treat. It's not until you live where you can see them that you realize how many times they get cancelled before actually getting shot off The best lauches are at night, where you can go to the beach (or intercostal) and watch 'em light up the sky and water at the same time. The first time I heard that sonic boom, I thought we were under attack from Iraq Cheers, Brad

Still fast. Now if they could do it without the thing sheding pieces that would be great ... for as much tax dollars that goes to launching that thing, I would like to see them make one that is dependable... I mean I know they reuse them, but they didn't come out of the box sheding pieces... Just my two cents... out of a billion or so that goes into a launch ... Does anyone actually know what their mission is? I am looking in your direction Florida ... not much news coverage in MN. Just curious what we are doing in space to make my life easier... But seriously, way to go NASA. Back in the saddle again.

I would like to drive down and see her go up, but its the not knowing when she will fly that stops me. I would love to bring my little boy down so he could see it, but the idea of a twelve hour + drive in the hope that she may go on schedule keeps me at home.
Would like to see and hear her go though.

Well actually it is right out my front door. Looking NNE. Takes about 7 seconds to rise high enough to be seen. Spectacular launch. Crystal clear Blue skies, with an occasional white cloud. I could have watched the orbiter till meco. I didn't though. I got back to work on the kitchen.

Maybe not. 75 seconds after the Shuttle lifts off, it has traveled 41 miles, working out to a half mile a second (if it were traveling at a constant speed, but it isn't since it starts from a dead stop), and I seem to recall the screen saying after about 4 minutes that it was traveling at 15000-20000 feet per SECOND!!! That works out to 12,371mph in only 4 minutes, and it was still accelerating at that point. I remember calculating that if we were on the Shuttle, it would only take about 4 1/2 minutes to reach my in-laws house in Connecticut from South Carolina (908miles). Le's just put it this way, you can put the Freak on, and a 36 tooth sprocket, you are NOT ever going to go that fast on our bikes...

Phil, go ahead. If you get within 1/10th of that speed-ON YOUR BIKE!!!!-I'll buy you any drink of your choice, anywhere!! Now, get to it!!!(oh, tip for the project, probably want to upgrade your tires with, say, solid Kevlar, and maybe real steel belts!!!
OH, just to clarify, "ON YOUR BIKE" does not mean while it is being transported in an SR-71 or anyother winged or rocket powered aircraft or flying vehicle....
